WANCHese, N.C. — Excitement is building in the Outer Banks with the upcoming grand opening of a new Women’s Center dedicated to helping women overcome substance abuse issues. The center, operated by Dare Challenge, is set to open its doors on September 15, and aims to provide a safe and supportive environment for female students seeking recovery.
The newly renovated facility is located on a picturesque farm, thoughtfully designed to comfortably accommodate six female students and two staff members. It features essential spaces such as a reception area, living room, classroom, chapel, and an art room. A spacious kitchen is available for hosting small events and providing nutritious meals for the women.
One of the standout components of the center is its emphasis on self-sustainability. Through various programs, students will gain hands-on skills that can generate income and support the ministry’s operation. Experts in horticulture will mentor students in creating a three-season garden filled with fresh produce, fruits, and herbs.
Additionally, they will learn valuable skills such as canning and preserving to transform homegrown ingredients into homemade products like jams and salves for sale to the public. A volunteer beekeeper will even introduce students to beekeeping, allowing them to harvest fresh honey.
To further enrich their learning experience, students will care for chickens on-site, providing eggs for both personal use and public sale. For those lacking a high school diploma, the center will also offer GED classes, ensuring that every woman has the opportunity for vocational growth.
Graduates of the program won’t just leave with improved life skills but will also have access to free courses at the College of The Albemarle’s Dare County campus. This initiative aims to help them learn a trade and secure better job prospects in the future.
The community is invited to celebrate the grand opening on September 15 from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. at 448 Old Wharf Road in Wanchese. Attendees can look forward to live music, delicious barbecue, and an opportunity to tour the beautiful campus.
This new center represents a significant step forward in supporting women in their recovery journeys while fostering community connections in the Outer Banks.
