In 2024, Wilmington faced election turmoil and natural disasters, but the community celebrated significant milestones in the arts and local heroes. The film industry rebounds with new projects, while cultural events and heartfelt stories remind residents of their resilient spirit. From record-breaking attendance at the Cameron Art Museum to emotional community moments, Wilmington shines through adversity, proving that joy and connection can prevail.
Wilmington has had its fair share of ups and downs this year. Between the elections, storms, and the loss of some beloved locals, it might seem like the clouds were never going to part. But in true Wilmington spirit, some incredible moments shone through the turbulence, helping to remind us that even in challenging times, there’s still much to celebrate.
The film and television industry in Wilmington has seen a significant bounce back after experiencing a slow start to 2024. The excitement began bubbling over with the highly anticipated third season of Amazon’s Prime Video series “The Summer I Turned Pretty,” which was filmed right here in our lovely city and is set to hit screens next year.
Adding to the buzzing scene, television creator Kevin Williamson, known for his classic “Dawson’s Creek,” brought us “The Waterfront,” a new series filming in Wilmington that’s making its way to Netflix. Meanwhile, the film “Merv,” featuring the incredibly talented Zooey Deschanel, was shot in downtown Wilmington, showcasing a unique twist of “warm weather snow.”
Wilmingtonian Jonas Pate, the mind behind “Outer Banks,” is also in on the action, shooting his new series “The Runarounds” here in Wilmington, expected to premiere on Prime Video next year. Plus, fans of the “Outer Banks” series got a treat with its fourth season premiering in September, further solidifying Wilmington as a vibrant backdrop for some of our favorite shows.
It wasn’t just the film and television world celebrating. Wilmington’s arts scene is thriving as well. The Cameron Art Museum was a beacon of hope, setting a new attendance record while raising an impressive $267,000 at its November gala for the exhibit “Closer to Home.” That’s a testament to the community’s support and passion for the arts!
The interest in promoting creativity doesn’t end there. A new local chapter of Creative Mornings, a national organization aimed at inspiring the creative community, launched in October! This initiative is sure to bring even more artistic flair to Wilmington.
Wilmington played host to some delightful celebrations this year, from the 75th anniversary of Surf City in March to St. Andrew’s on-the-Sound Episcopal Church’s 100th anniversary in April. The community came together to honor our heritage and cherished moments.
Sometimes, the best happenings come in the form of heartwarming stories. One particularly touching moment went viral as Imeek Watkins proposed to Angelica May after her final chemotherapy treatment. The love and support demonstrated by the Southport community as they rallied to help a woman find her lost heirloom wedding ring was an emotional reminder of our connections.
A special story emerged from the animal kingdom as well, with Pepper, a retired therapy dog, being saved from euthanasia and adopted by a loving couple who could tend to her special needs. And let’s not forget Duckie, a friendly dog who spent an incredible 175 days in a shelter before finding a forever family who drove over 300 miles to meet him.
This year was also packed with celebrations, including the 20th anniversary of Reggie’s 42nd Street Tavern in October and the 30th edition of the Cucalorus Film Festival in November. Recognizing notable achievements, South Brunswick High School’s softball team brought home the NCHSAA 3A state championship in June. Plus, the newly renovated Randall Library and Discovery Hall at the University of North Carolina Wilmington welcomed visitors in August.
As the year winds down, Wilmington stands as a testimony to resilience, community spirit, and joy amid challenges. While the storms may sweep through, let’s keep our eyes and hearts open for the amazing stories of hope and celebration that continue to blossom all around us!
