Corolla Community Grieves Following Wild Horse Tragedy

Corolla, N.C. – The quiet beauty of Corolla’s Outer Banks was shattered this weekend after a tragic accident involving a wild horse left both the equine community and local citizens in mourning. Two individuals now face charges after a wild stallion, affectionately known as Bullwinkle, was fatally struck by a utility task vehicle (UTV) on Friday night.

Details of the Incident

The heartbreaking incident was witnessed by a beachgoer who was surf fishing with their child. The witness immediately called emergency services upon seeing the crash unfold. Although the initial scene showed Bullwinkle standing and moving around, he ultimately suffered severe injuries—including internal bleeding and fractures in both hind legs—which led to the difficult decision to euthanize him.

According to the Corolla Wild Horse Fund, Bullwinkle was a beloved member of the wild horse herd. Herd manager Meg Puckett commented, “It’s tragic but sometimes accidents happen. But when it’s due to reckless behavior, it makes it even more heartbreaking.” Bullwinkle was ten years old and had been in his prime, actively participating in the herd’s social structure, including competing for mates.

Charges Filed Against Drivers

In the wake of the accident, Currituck County deputies identified the driver as Porter Williamson from Chesapeake, who reportedly fled the scene. He is now charged with resisting, delaying, or obstructing a law enforcement officer. Alongside him, Rhonda Williamson faces similar charges and has been accused of providing false information to authorities.

Puckett described the physical consequences of the impact, noting the seriousness of Bullwinkle’s injuries. The stallion was known for his vigorous behavior in the wild, often seen competing with other males for the attention of mares.

An Endangered Species

The Corolla wild horses are a cherished and endangered breed, with an estimated remaining population of around 100 in the area. The loss of Bullwinkle represents not just the passing of a single horse but potentially impacts future generations, as his breeding capabilities have now been lost.

Puckett emphasized the importance of protecting the surviving wild horses, stating, “Each individual is critically important for the long-term survival of the herd.” The Corolla herd faces many challenges, including environmental threats and the difficulty of sustaining a small gene pool. “It’s not just about protecting these horses; it’s about protecting our natural heritage,” she said.

Community Call to Action

In light of this tragic event, Puckett urged both tourists and local residents to practice responsible behavior while visiting the beach, reminding everyone of their vital role in safeguarding the habitat. Simple actions, such as properly disposing of trash and adhering to speed limits, can significantly improve the safety of the area.

“We all bear responsibility for the environment and the wildlife that inhabit it. Taking care of our surroundings helps ensure the future survival of our beautiful wild horses,” Puckett concluded.

As the community reflects on Bullwinkle’s life and the tragic circumstances surrounding his death, it serves as a poignant reminder of the delicate balance between human activity and wildlife preservation.
