Corolla, N.C. – Charges Filed Following Fatal Accident with Wild Horse

In a tragic event that has left the Corolla community mourning, two individuals are facing charges after a wild horse was struck by a utility task vehicle (UTV) over the weekend, resulting in the horse’s death. The Corolla Wild Horse Fund has deemed this incident a significant loss for the wild horse herd, which is already facing numerous threats to its survival.

The Incident

The incident occurred when a 10-year-old stallion named Bullwinkle was hit by the UTV, suffering severe injuries that led to his euthanasia shortly after. Herd manager Meg Puckett expressed her deep sorrow over the loss, emphasizing the long-term impact this could have on the viability of the wild horse population.

The Impact on the Herd

Puckett highlighted how Bullwinkle was in his prime and could have contributed significantly to the herd’s gene pool. “If you think about the number of foals he could’ve eventually sired, and then the number of foals after that, you’re talking about generations of loss,” she remarked.

Charges Filed

Currituck County deputies identified the driver as Porter Williamson from Chesapeake. Reports indicate that he fled the scene of the accident. He has been charged with resist, delay, and obstruct, while his passenger, Rhonda Williamson, also faces similar charges and is accused of providing false information to law enforcement.

Reckless Driving Consequences

Authorities believe that the impact of the UTV caused Bullwinkle to spin, leading to severe injuries in both of his hind legs and significant internal injuries. Such recklessness, according to Puckett, adds unnecessary challenges to an already vulnerable species.

Preservation and Responsibility

The Corolla Wild Horses are an endangered breed, with only about 100 left in the Corolla area. Puckett urged the public to take responsibility for their actions when visiting habitats like these. “It’s a privilege to be able to access that habitat, and everyone should understand their responsibility in protecting it,” she said.

She emphasized simple measures that can help preserve the wild horses, such as cleaning up trash when enjoying the beach and being mindful of vehicle operations on the dunes.

Echoes of the Loss

The loss of Bullwinkle echoes through the community, and while his legacy may continue through potential offspring, it is a stark reminder of the fragile balance between nature and human activity. Puckett mentioned the importance of each individual horse in maintaining the herd’s genetic diversity and long-term survival.

As the Corolla community processes this loss, it also reflects on the essential measures needed to protect these majestic wild horses and ensure their survival for future generations.
