Wild Horse Euthanized After Being Hit by Vehicle in Outer Banks
Corolla, North Carolina – A heartbreaking incident occurred on Saturday when a wild horse, known as Bullwinkle, was euthanized after being hit by a vehicle on one of the beaches in the Outer Banks. This tragic event highlights the ongoing challenges faced by the Banker horse breed, which is critically endangered.
About Bullwinkle and the Banker Horses
Bullwinkle, a 10-year-old stallion, was one of only about 200 Banker horses remaining in the wild. These horses are descendants of those brought over by Spanish explorers in the 1500s and have adapted to living in the unique environment of the Outer Banks. Loved by locals and visitors alike for their wild and untamed spirit, these horses symbolize the natural beauty of the region.

The Corolla Wild Horse Fund, an organization dedicated to protecting and managing these horses, expressed deep sorrow over the loss of Bullwinkle. “He was in the prime of his life and went from being a symbol of what it means to be wild and free to a tragic example of how irresponsible human behavior can cause pain and suffering in an instant,” they stated on social media.
The Incident
The accident happened when an off-road vehicle struck Bullwinkle, resulting in serious injuries that led to the difficult decision to euthanize him. Unfortunately, the collision underscores the dangers these majestic creatures face, particularly as their habitats overlap with human activity.
Legal Repercussions
In connection with the incident, the Currituck County Sheriff’s Office arrested a man named Porter Williamson, 57, from Chesapeake, Virginia. He was charged with resisting a public officer after he initially fled the scene but returned when officers began towing the vehicle. His next of kin, Rhonda Williamson, was also charged with the same offense.
