Community Events Impacted by Tropical Storm Debby in Nags Head

Hello, Nags Head! As many of you are probably aware, we have weather-related changes on our hands thanks to the impending arrival of Tropical Storm Debby. It’s that time of year when we all have to be a little cautious and consider our safety first. So, let’s dive into what this means for our upcoming community events that were set to take place this week.

Old Time Summer Fun Ice Cream Social Postponed

First up on the list is the highly anticipated Old Time Summer Fun Ice Cream Social, organized by the Nags Head Precinct of the Dare County Democratic Party. Originally slated for this Thursday, August 8th, at Booty Treats, the fun has been put on ice—literally! Mary Kelley, the Precinct Chair, shared her sentiments about the situation, saying, “The safety of our community is our top priority. We apologize for any inconvenience and will announce a new date for the event as soon as possible.” So, hang tight; a delicious scoop of ice cream and engaging conversation with local candidates will be rescheduled soon. If you’re keen on getting more Information, feel free to drop Mary an email at nagsheaddems@gmail.com.

Outer Banks Regional Hazard Mitigation Plan Meeting Postponed

Next, we were all gearing up for the public meeting on the Outer Banks Regional Hazard Mitigation Plan, where community members could provide crucial input on local safety strategies. Sadly, the meeting set for 5 p.m. on August 7 at the Avon Volunteer Fire Department has also been postponed due to the storm. And it doesn’t stop there! Another meeting planned for 11 a.m. on August 8 at the Corolla Public Library has also been put on hold. Don’t worry, folks; the new dates and times will be announced shortly after we navigate through the storm’s impacts.

In the meantime, if you’re interested in voicing your opinions and participating in the planning process, the community is still encouraged to fill out a short survey available until August 30, 2024. This survey allows you to share your thoughts and helps the planning team better understand local risks and problems. Together, we can work towards better mitigation activities for the future.

Keeper James Cape Hatteras Lighthouse Program Update

And for those excited about the Keeper James Cape Hatteras Lighthouse Program previously scheduled for this Thursday, we hate to break it to you—this event has also faced the dreaded “Debby Delayed” fate! But don’t fret; a new date will be announced, and we’re sure it will be well worth the wait!

Stay Alert and Safe!

As Tropical Storm Debby inches closer, community members are urged to remain vigilant and cautious. Make sure to keep track of the weather updates and stay safe during this storm. Let’s come together as a community, look out for each other, and make sure that we are all prepared to weather this storm!

And while it’s disappointing to see our social events and important meetings delayed, it’s crucial that we prioritize safety first. Here’s hoping we can reschedule these events soon and enjoy some time together with ice cream and good conversations without storm clouds overhead!

Until next time, stay tuned for updates regarding rescheduled events! We look forward to enjoying those sweet summer moments as soon as it’s safe. Take care, Nags Head!
