Wawa Makes a Splash in Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina

Kill Devil Hills is buzzing with excitement as it recently welcomed its very first Wawa store! On May 16, this beloved gas station and convenience store officially opened its doors at 1900 N. Croatan Highway, right near Harris Teeter. It’s a momentous occasion not only for the locals but also for Wawa, as this is just the start of an ambitious plan to expand its footprint across North Carolina.

A Big Expansion on the Horizon

What’s really exciting is that this location marks the first of ten Wawa stores that are expected to pop up across North Carolina by the end of 2024. And if that’s not enough, plans are already in place for an additional eleven stores to open in 2025. Cities like Rocky Mount, Elizabeth City, Greenville, Wilson, and Goldsboro will soon have their very own Wawa locations. Wawa has set its sights on building a total of 90 locations in the state over the next eight to ten years. That’s a lot of hoagies!

Investing in the Community

Each Wawa store comes with a price tag of over $7 million to build, employing around 140 contractors during the construction process. Once operational, every store will hire an average of 35 associates, generating more than 3,000 long-term jobs throughout North Carolina. That’s a significant boost to local employment!

Open Around the Clock

If you’re craving a snack in the wee hours of the morning or need to refuel your car, the Kill Devil Hills Wawa is here for you! It’s open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, ensuring that no matter when the urge strikes—day or night—you can satisfy those cravings.

Grand Opening Festivities

The grand opening was a delightful affair. The first 250 customers were greeted with special milestone Wawa T-shirts—a memento to remember this special opening day. The fun didn’t stop there! Attendees were treated to a “Taste of Wawa” event, showcasing complimentary food samples that allowed everyone to indulge in some delicious offerings from the store.

A Bit of Friendly Competition

charitable hoagie building competition that brought local first responders and charity representatives together. Each team showcased their skills as they vied for a $1,000 donation to their respective charities. It was a wonderful way to give back to the community while having some fun!

Building Connections

Wawa’s culture is rooted in community connection, with 60% family ownership and 39% associate ownership. The area manager emphasized the importance of building relationships with locals well before the store opened. Wawa aims to further foster these community ties by supporting local charities and initiatives through grants, proving that they’re committed to more than just selling snacks and gas.

Watch for Wawa in the Future!

As plans unfold for future locations, the excitement over Wawa’s arrival in North Carolina keeps growing. With the company dedicated to investing in local communities and providing jobs, it seems that Wawa is here not just to serve but to stay. Keep an eye out as they work to fill up our streets with even more of these convenient spots, ensuring that North Carolinians can enjoy great food and service wherever they are!
