Storrs, CT – The UConn men’s golf team recently showcased their skills and determination at the ECU Intercollegiate, held at the beautiful Brook Valley Country Club. Competing against a total of 16 teams, the Huskies managed a commendable third-place finish, wrapping up the tournament with a total score of 894 (+30) over three rounds of exciting golf.
The tournament spanned two thrilling days of competition, featuring three rounds of play, with the UConn team kicking things off on Monday with a score of 302. The Huskies quickly found their rhythm in the second round on Tuesday morning, shooting an impressive 292 that boosted their standing considerably. To round things off, the team closed the day with a solid score of 300 in the final round on Tuesday afternoon.
While UConn put forth an admirable effort, the tournament was won by UCF with a score of 872. East Carolina also performed strongly to secure second place with a score of 884. In the wake of these formidable competitors, UConn’s performance stands out, reflecting their hard work and teamwork throughout the event.
One of the most notable performances came from sophomore Alex Heard hailing from Boca Raton, Florida. He tied for eighth place overall with an impressive score of +2, having shot a total of 218 across the three rounds (73-69-76). Heard’s second-round score of 69 not only propelled him into the top 10, but it was also one of only six under-par scores recorded in that round.
This remarkable finish marked Heard’s second top-10 finish of the spring season, making it his ninth round at par or better this year. He also demonstrated consistency on the course, finishing fourth in the tournament for total pars with an impressive 38 pars across 54 holes.
Senior Ray Dennehy from Princeton, MA, also had a notable outing, finishing in 24th place with a score of 224 (77-75-72). Dennehy particularly excelled on par 5s, where he averaged an impressive 4.58 (-5), making him the top performer in this category.
Furthermore, he tied for fourth in the tournament with a total of 10 birdies, showing his proficiency on the greens. Junior Connor Goode from Glastonbury, CT, tied for 27th place with a score of 225 (75-72-78), while sophomore Bradley Sawka from Ellington, CT, finished tied for 46th with a score of 231 (79-76-74).
Rounding out the UConn team, senior Eric Boulger from Walpole, MA, ended in 61st place with a score of 234 (77-81-76), while other Huskies played as individuals: senior Vikram Konanki from Newton, MA, took 43rd with a score of 230 (77-78-75), and freshman Matt Costello from Taunton, MA, was tied for 81st with a score of 239 (87-75-77).
With their Valiant performance at the ECU Intercollegiate now behind them, the UConn men’s golf team will take a well-deserved week off to recharge. They will be back in action when they compete in the Golfweek Invitational at True Blue Golf Club in Pawley’s Island, SC, from March 31 to April 2, 2025.
