In a recent announcement from New York, President-elect Donald Trump has revealed his intention to appoint Linda McMahon, the former CEO of World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE), as the next Secretary of Education. This news came to light on Tuesday night through a post on Trump’s personal social media platform, Truth Social.
Linda McMahon, who previously served as the Administrator of the Small Business Administration during Trump’s first term, is not just known for her corporate leadership but also her government experience. She was a member of the Connecticut Board of Education for two years, where she worked alongside fourteen other members to oversee public education in Connecticut, including its Technical High School system.
In his statement, Trump highlighted McMahon’s extensive leadership experience and her understanding of both business and education. He expressed confidence that she would help empower the next generation of American students and workers, saying, “As Secretary of Education, Linda will fight tirelessly to expand ‘Choice’ to every State in America, and empower parents to make the best education decisions for their families.”
President Trump has previously indicated a desire to shake up the educational landscape in America, suggesting that he might consider disbanding the Department of Education altogether, which has been operational since 1980. The agency states its mission is to “promote student achievement and preparation for global competitiveness by fostering educational excellence and ensuring equal access for students of all ages.”
Adding to the conversation, former Education Secretary Betsy DeVos recently shared her thoughts on the matter. She suggested that the Department of Education has not provided significant value and encourages a shift towards more localized education funding. DeVos stated that the bureaucrats within the Department have not effectively addressed or closed the achievement gaps but rather widened them over the past four decades.
She believes the opportunity for Trump to significantly alter the department exists, encouraging him to “take the power away from the Department of Education, block-grant those funds, continue to invest in education, but get it down to a much more local level where better decisions are made on behalf of students.”
McMahon’s nomination comes with high expectations. Trump underscored her potential role in shaping education policies, stating, “We will send Education BACK TO THE STATES, and Linda will spearhead that effort.” This statement aligns with the Trump administration’s overall goal to decentralize a number of federal functions.
Speaking of her time at the Small Business Administration, McMahon stated in her resignation letter, “While it has truly been the honor of a lifetime to serve our country in this Administration, it is time for me to step down and return to the private sector.” She emphasized her commitment to continue advocating for Trump and his policies.
The public’s reaction to McMahon’s nomination has been mixed. Supporters believe her business acumen can help address the challenges facing the education system, while critics argue that her lack of traditional education experience could be a drawback. Nonetheless, her appointment signals a shift toward a more entrepreneurial approach to educational reform.
As the new nomination awaits confirmation, observers are keenly watching to see how McMahon plans to balance her vision for educational innovation with the practical needs of the current educational system in America.
