His adventurous spirit and dedication to his businesses have left a significant impact on many lives.

A Life Well-Lived

At the age of 65, Paul Shaver seemed to embody the essence of living life to the fullest. Though his physician recorded his age as 55, those who knew him recognized a man who packed a lifetime of adventures into his years. Born and raised in Newport News, Virginia, he was the son of the late Paul F.M. Shaver II and Betty Shaver. His educational journey took him through Warwick High School before diving into a varied career that spanned many interests and passions.

Initially working as a bank manager, Paul also contributed to the family piano business, Shaver’s Magnavox. But Paulie’s zest for life led him to more thrilling experiences as he traveled extensively across Europe, taught skiing in Switzerland, and even ran with the bulls in Pamplona—living out a dream that few would attempt.

A Thriving Business in the Outer Banks

Relocating to Nags Head over 34 years ago, Paul lovingly embraced the Outer Banks lifestyle. He was a prominent figure in the local business scene as the owner of The Black Pelican Seafood Company Restaurant in Kitty Hawk. Alongside his partner John Lancaster, Paul successfully ran the nightclub “Oz,” later venturing into real estate with Nags Head Realty.

Paul had a hand in various businesses, including co-owning the Sugarcreek Café, reflecting his knack for entrepreneurship. His influence didn’t stop in the Outer Banks; he also engaged in real estate ventures as far-reaching as Roanoke Valley, Wyoming, and beautiful Switzerland.

Adventurer at Heart

Beyond his business endeavors, Paul Shaver was known for his adventurous soul. His passion for racing led him to participate in marathon rally races and desert racing across Mexico. He was also an avid pilot, dedicating his time to humanitarian efforts by transporting burn victims and their families for the Shriners. Paul decided to take to the skies when he wasn’t busy living life on the ground, where he helped those affected by Hurricane Katrina through various relief missions.

A Community’s Grief

In a heartbreaking incident, Paul left for a drive on his ATV on his mountain property in Montvale, Virginia, but failed to return by nightfall. Concerned for his safety, his partner and a neighbor initiated a search and ultimately discovered that he had been thrown from the ATV, suffering injuries that were believed to be fatal. A medical examiner indicated that he likely passed away almost instantly from the injury.

Remembering Paul Shaver

Paul is survived by his loving partner, Sarah Morris, and his children, Kimberly Harrah and Leonard A. Bennett with his wife, Drina Northam. Adding an extra layer of love to his legacy, he cherished his two granddaughters, Kendall Carrithers and Sydney Smith. He also leaves behind two brothers, Billy and Jack Shaver, and one sister, Sally Cudworth. Paulie’s family will always remember the loss of his younger sister, Beth, who tragically died in a car accident.

A memorial celebration in honor of Paul Shaver is scheduled for Tuesday, August 8, at 6 p.m. at the James River Country Club in Newport News, Virginia.
