Henderson, Nev. — The peaceful suburban life in Henderson, just outside Las Vegas, has been rocked by a heartbreaking tragedy. Earlier this month, 20-year-old Evan Scoggins and his mother, Anastasia Scoggins, aged 44, were senselessly shot and killed in their home. The alleged shooter, Karl Groschen, who was Anastasia’s husband, now faces murder charges for this shocking crime.
The tragic events occurred on the night of October 11, when both Evan and Anastasia lost their lives in a violent incident that has left family and friends reeling. Groschen has since been arrested and charged with two counts of murder, and he is currently being held in jail without bond. He is scheduled to appear in court next month.
Evan was not just another young man; he was a cherished member of his community back in the Outer Banks of North Carolina. His father, Andrew Scoggins, fondly recalled how Evan was “just the easiest little boy to have around.” Growing up in Poplar Branch, Evan had a beautiful childhood, filled with laughter, joy, and love. Andrew reminisced about Evan’s success in school, particularly when he would win spelling bees and play football.
“Evan loved to read,” Andrew shared, recalling the countless hours they spent together on the beach. Andrew also coached Evan’s third-grade football team, where they achieved an undefeated season and won the championship. These were moments of pride that Andrew will cherish forever.
Life for Evan took a turn when his parents divorced. After the divorce, Anastasia remarried Karl Groschen, and their family moved around quite a bit, from North Carolina to Charlotte, then Missouri and Nebraska, before finally settling in Nevada. Despite the changes, Evan always held a special place in his heart for his roots.
“He remembers his family life on the beach very well,” Andrew said, pointing out the special moments that defined Evan’s early years, like playing with his beloved cat, Midnight. “He missed those things that made him feel like he was part of some small group that engaged in some real continuity of community.”
While reminiscing about Evan, Andrew mentioned that his son had hinted at potential troubles in his life. “Yes, he did, on his Instagram, and he was very explicit on that,” Andrew revealed. This raised serious red flags about Evan’s safety that now weigh heavily on his family.
In the wake of this tragic incident, Andrew Scoggins is determined to seek justice for his son and is planning to file a lawsuit against Groschen for wrongful death. “This shouldn’t have happened,” he expressed, clearly devastated by the loss of his son.
As Evan’s remains will be brought back home to Poplar Branch for burial, Andrew has also set up a GoFundMe account to help cover the funeral expenses. The outpour of support from their community has been heartwarming, proving that even in times of great sorrow, love and unity can shine through.
This tragic event has shaken not only the Scoggins family but the entire community of Henderson and the Outer Banks. Friends and family remember Evan as a kind-hearted, gentle soul who brought joy to everyone he met. As they come together to mourn his loss, they are reminded of the importance of community, love, and support during difficult times.
The road ahead may be tough for those grieving the losses of Evan and Anastasia, but with shared memories and love in their hearts, they will continue to honor their legacy.
