On a seemingly normal Friday evening in the charming coastal town of Currituck County, a heartbreaking incident unfolded that would leave the community in shock. At approximately 11:30 PM, a 911 call was placed by a visitor who was surf fishing, alerting authorities that a horse had been struck by a vehicle on the beach.
The horse, known as Bullwinkle, was a magnificent 10-year-old stallion enjoyed by the locals and visitors alike for his wild spirit. Eyewitness accounts reported that he was simply standing on the beach when tragedy struck. Fortunately, no other horses were involved in the incident, but the outcome for Bullwinkle would prove devastating.
Thanks to the quick thinking of the individual who called 911 that night, first responders were able to arrive at the scene promptly. The driver of the vehicle was arrested, but details of the circumstances surrounding the crash remain unclear.
As the dawn broke on Saturday morning, a veterinarian arrived to assess Bullwinkle’s injuries. Sadly, the injuries he had suffered were severe and ultimately fatal. Witnesses described a harrowing scene, as Bullwinkle, known for his fierce spirit, remained wary and defensive even as he lay on the dune unable to stand. His tenacity and wild nature shone through even in his final moments.
Despite the horrendous circumstances, those present worked tirelessly to ensure Bullwinkle didn’t suffer any longer than necessary. He was humanely euthanized, allowing him to pass without enduring further pain. The community takes solace in the fact that he was given a respectful and dignified burial, resting peacefully at the edge of the meadow where he was often spotted.
In light of this tragedy, Currituck County residents have rallied together to support one another. Appreciation has poured in for everyone who contributed to handling the situation. The community is especially thankful to that initial 911 caller, saying, “Without you, there may have been no consequences for the driver. Bullwinkle might have suffered for a much longer time.”
The Currituck County Sheriff’s Department responded quickly, providing assistance and support through the difficult night and into the following day. It’s heartening to see a community united in the face of hardship, with residents expressing their grief while celebrating the wild spirit that Bullwinkle embodied.
Many locals have taken to social media to share their memories of Bullwinkle, recalling his wild runs along the beach and his majestic presence. “He was exactly what a wild Banker stallion is supposed to be,” one resident remarked, adding that Bullwinkle never truly belonged anywhere but the beach.
Though it’s tough to find comfort amidst this tragic incident, the community takes heart in knowing that Bullwinkle lived a life free and wild, just as he was meant to be. Some are now advocating for greater awareness concerning the safety of wildlife at beaches, encouraging visitors to drive with caution and remember they share these lands with beautiful creatures like Bullwinkle.
As Currituck County moves forward, there’s a lingering sense of appreciation for the life of Bullwinkle. His spirit will forever be a part of the beach he called home. While nothing can erase the sorrow of that fateful night, the compassion and determination shown by the community serve as a beautiful testament to the love shared for their local wildlife.
As we say goodbye to Bullwinkle, let us carry forward the lessons learned from this tragedy, ensuring that our beaches remain a safe haven for both people and the wild creatures that grace them.
