Late on the evening of October 21, 2024, in the cozy town of Avon, North Carolina, an ordinary traffic stop turned into a significant incident for local law enforcement. At around 11:15 p.m., deputies from the C-District were on routine patrol when they chose to stop a vehicle at the intersection of NC Hwy 12 and Ramp 34. What they discovered during this stop was anything but ordinary.
As the deputies approached the vehicle, they quickly learned that one of the passengers had an out of county warrant for their arrest. While this situation is not unheard of, it prompted a deeper investigation. To keep everyone safe and to uphold the law, the deputies conducted a search of the vehicle, which yielded some drug paraphernalia. This discovery hinted at a more serious issue brewing within the vehicle.
With the passenger, later identified as Annie M. Cleaver, 28, from Frisco, already placed in the back of a patrol vehicle, authorities felt it was necessary to perform a thorough search. Upon removing her from the patrol vehicle for a more detailed check, deputies found an amount of Methamphetamine hidden away. This unexpected find led to her immediate arrest.
Annie was quickly charged with Felony Possession of Methamphetamine and was also served with a Misdemeanor Failure to Appear Warrant that was out of Camden, NC. It turns out her day was about to take an unfortunate turn. Cleaver was issued a $500 secured bond for the warrant, but she faced a hold concerning the more serious Felony charge.
The Dare County Sheriff’s Office is taking this incident seriously. They have a strong commitment to public safety and are determined to combat drug-related offenses within the community. These kinds of encounters serve as a reminder to residents about the ongoing issues surrounding illegal substances and the need for vigilance.
