The North Carolina Aquarium on Roanoke Island has launched a joyous stride into summer by offering a limited number of scholarships for their highly celebrated, week-long 2024 Summer camps. Aimed towards school-aged students, the scholarships have been made possible through the Burroughs Wellcome Student STEM Enrichment Program.
The scholarships, a gleaming beacon of the Aquarium’s commitment to inclusive education, aims to pull in and inspire students particularly from underserved and underrepresented backgrounds ranging from the ages of 6 to 13. The triumphant goal behind these scholarships is to encourage North Carolina students to trail blaze a path towards excellence in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics—otherwise known as STEM education.
These programs invariably streak apart from traditional classroom activities—ushering in a palpable excitement of discovery and learning. The scholarship recipients will be equipped with registration and activity fees to partake in these interactive, STEM-focused educational camps.
The clock is ticking as the deadline for scholarship applications approaches. Prospective students have until March 25 to step up and submit their applications for the program. For further details regarding application process, registration dates and information for the array of weekly camp offerings, students may peruse the official website of the North Carolina Aquarium.
Following the scholarship application date, the gates for general camp registration will swing open on April 1 at 9 a.m. However, sharp-eared budding Aquarists have more reason to cheer. The aquarium is shining a light on a special discount—Aquarium members will enjoy a 10% cutback on all camp fees!
The Summer Camp program boasts a dazzling array of offerings, ensuring a precious educational experience for each participant. The programs include the Junior Aquarist Camp, the Junior Shellebrate Turtles Camp, the Animal Planet Camp, and several more. Details of all offered camps will be viewable on the website from March 13 onward.
The Student STEM Enrichment Program, fuelled by the Burroughs Wellcome Fund, is responsible for enabling the North Carolina Aquarium to reach out and offer summer camp scholarships to deserving students aiming to step into the world of STEM. This commendable initiative is a part of their larger program aptly titled “A Year of STEM and the North Carolina Aquariums.”
These scholarships represent not just a golden opportunity for students fascinated by aquatic life, its assortment, and its preservation but for students aiming to dive into the depths of STEM education and discover their potential—and possibly their future careers with the North Carolina Aquarium.
