In the charming seaside town of Southern Shores, a profound sense of loss has swept through the community following the passing of Zachary McDaniel Owen, affectionately known as Zack. At only 29 years old, Zack’s life may have been all too short, but the memories he leaves behind are filled with laughter, achievements, and an undeniable spirit that touched so many.
A Lasting Legacy
Zack passed away on August 4, 2024, surrounded by the love of his family. He was predeceased by his father, William C. Owen, and his cherished grandparents, each of whom played a significant role in shaping the man Zack became. The Owen family now holds onto their memories tightly, including his mother, Janet M. Owen-Rosso (and husband, William L. Rosso), along with uncles, cousins, and many beloved friends.
A Uniquely Gifted Individual
Known for his striking bright red hair and infectious laughter, Zack was not just another face in the crowd. He had a unique sense of humor that could light up a room and a brilliant intellect that made him stand out among his peers. Despite facing numerous challenges throughout his life, Zack’s family credits *countless professionals* who dedicated their time and care to his development in areas like muscle tone, oral-motor function, and speech.
Adventures and Achievements
Fueling his passions, Zack became heavily involved in the Boy Scouts, achieving the esteemed rank of Eagle Scout by the age of just 15. He also joined the Order of the Arrow, Scouting’s Honor Society, where his leadership skills shone brightly. He went on to graduate valedictorian from First Flight High School, a true testament to his hard work ethic and intelligence.
A Love for Learning
After graduating high school, Zack pursued his dreams at the Georgia Institute of Technology, where he earned a degree in Aerospace Engineering. “A ramblin’ wreck from Georgia Tech,” he wore that pride like a badge. He later continued his education with a Master’s Degree in Aerospace Engineering from Old Dominion University. Zack’s thirst for knowledge didn’t stop there, as he constantly honed his skills through conferences and specialized courses.
A Passion for Flight
Professionally, Zack carved a path at the Boeing Corporation in Las Cruces, New Mexico, where he showcased his engineering prowess. However, the Eastern shores called him back, and he recently returned to the Outer Banks, hoping to find a job that would keep him close to the family he loved so dearly.
Celebrating Zack’s Life
The community is invited to honor Zack’s remarkable life at a memorial service on Friday, August 16th, at 11:00 am. The service will take place at the Kitty Hawk United Methodist Church, followed by a reception in the Fellowship Hall. It’s a perfect opportunity for those who knew him to come together and share stories that made them smile.
Giving Back in Honor of Zack
While flowers are lovely, the Owen family has requested that anyone wishing to honor Zack’s memory consider making memorial donations to two cherished causes: the Outer Banks Community Foundation or the Nature Conservancy at Nags Head Woods. In supporting these organizations, his legacy will live on, helping others in the community.
