Southern Shores’ Siena Nason Shines as an Academic Star

In the sunny town of Southern Shores, a young woman is making waves in the world of cancer research, and her story is absolutely inspiring. Meet Siena Nason, who has recently completed her junior year at the prestigious University of Pennsylvania. Siena, a proud native of Southern Shores, has always had a knack for science, and her journey is nothing short of remarkable.

A Journey Rooted in Passion

Siena’s love for science and math blossomed during her high school years at The North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics. Reflecting back on her time there, she shared, “I took biochemistry and thought it was really fun. We got to extract mushrooms in biology, and I realized how interesting it was and how much I liked it.” This early enthusiasm led her to continue her studies at one of the top universities in the country.

Researching for a Cure

Currently, Siena is making her mark at the Ruella Lab at the Perelman School of Medicine, where she is part of an innovative team researching next-generation CAR-T therapy aimed at combating Lymphoma and Leukemia. For those wondering, CAR-T therapy uses genetically modified T cells, a breakthrough approach rooted in immunotherapy, that’s gaining traction for its effectiveness against aggressive cancers. The University of Pennsylvania is leading the way in this field, making Siena’s contributions even more significant.

Looking to the Future

As she approaches her senior year, it’s clear that Siena is not slowing down. “I’m starting a similar cycle as I did when I was starting my senior year in high school, looking at different graduate programs to earn a PhD degree,” she remarked with a spark of excitement. With her undergraduate experience under her belt, she is eager to embark on this next chapter of her academic life.

Grateful for Support

One thing Siena is particularly thankful for is the Milton A. Jewell Academic Scholarship she received. This scholarship has been a significant help, allowing her to focus on her studies and research, especially during the summer months in bustling Philadelphia. She noted, “Having this scholarship has been really helpful, especially during the summers when I have been living in Philadelphia and working in the lab.” It’s heartwarming to see how such support can empower students to chase their dreams.

A Legacy of Excellence

The Milton A. Jewell Academic Scholarship, established in 2003, aims to honor exceptional students who exhibit not only academic brilliance but also leadership skills and a strong commitment to their local communities. It’s initiatives like this that pave the way for students like Siena to pursue their dreams at renowned institutions, pushing the envelope in transformative research that could change lives globally.
