Hatteras, NC, May 29, 2024 – Summer on Hatteras Island is set to kick off with a bang as the 12th Annual Rock The Cape, an exciting community event featuring local musicians and artists, will be held from June 6-7. Over 20 visual artists, a selection of musically gifted locals, and eight art galleries have confirmed their participation in this vibrant gathering, further solidifying its place as an eagerly-awaited summer hallmark.
Gearing up for the event, local event stalwarts Kitty Hawk Kites’ Waves Village Resort in Rodanthe will be hosting an outdoor concert and art show, promising a fun-filled afternoon for families on Thursday, June 6. The event, scheduled from 2pm to 7pm, will be free for the public, offering a line-up of activities ranging from music to arts and crafts.
This annual tradition will see over 20 local artists showcasing and selling their handcrafted creations, while spectators will be treated to an entertaining medley of musical performances. The concert bill includes local Hatteras musicians, the Celtic-influenced music of Nova Scotia’s popular duo Cassie and Maggie, and the catchy pop, funk and soul vibes by the celebrated four-member band Night Routine.
In a debut performance at Rock The Cape, students from the Hatteras Island Community Strings will take the stage for a unique performance. The non-profit organization, under the guidance of Jessie Taylor, has been offering free group music lessons in the ukulele, violin, and guitar to children from the local community. At the event, these budding musicians will show their progress, performing beloved classics like Amazing Grace, The Lion Sleeps Tonight, and Somewhere Over the Rainbow, among others.
Further enhancing the celebratory atmosphere, the Good Winds Restaurant will be offering delicacies for purchase, and free yard games courtesy of Kitty Hawk Kites will keep attendees engaged throughout the event.
The following day, June 7, will see the Rock The Cape Gallery Tour taking place. This free tour offers an opportunity for art enthusiasts to take a self-guided tour of eight Hatteras Island art galleries. Participating galleries include Pea Island Art Gallery, Studio 12, Swell Art: Gallery + Gifts, Artistic Treasures, Red Drum Pottery, Blue Lagoon, Family Jewels, and Blue Pelican Gallery, Gifts + Yarn.
During the tour, the galleries are set to offer demonstrations, classes, live music, food, drinks, and other enjoyable activities. Specific information about the festivities at each gallery can be accessed at the DareArts.org/rockthecape.
Rock The Cape was conceived in 2012 as an effort to celebrate galleries, artists, and the creative community on Hatteras Island. With ongoing sponsorships from the Outer Banks Visitors Bureau and Kitty Hawk Kites as co-hosts, this year’s Rock The Cape is all set to light up the summer season with its exuberant celebration of Hatteras Island’s artistic heritage.
