Nags Head, North Carolina, is gearing up for some road improvements that will help keep traffic flowing smoothly and prevent any water issues in the area. Contractors working for the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) are set to begin a project to replace drainage crossline pipes and mill and resurface the roadway on U.S. 158, also known as South Croatan Highway. This part of town, fondly known as Whalebone Junction, is about to see some significant changes!
The first phase of the project will focus on replacing a pipe culvert underneath U.S. 158, along with two crossline pipes right at the intersection of Cape Hatteras National Park Road and South Virginia Dare Trail. These improvements are essential to ensure that the road can handle rainwater efficiently and that the travel experience remains safe for everyone.
As construction kicks off, traffic on U.S. 158 will be narrowed down to two lanes from East Gray Eagle Street all the way through the Whalebone intersection. So, if you’re planning a trip through this area, it’s a good idea to keep in mind that travel may take a little longer than usual. But don’t worry, it’s all for a good cause!
Motorists looking to travel between U.S. 158 and N.C. 12 will need to reroute via East Gull Street. To assist with this detour, a temporary traffic signal will be installed at the East Gull Street intersection with U.S. 158. This should help to keep things moving as smoothly as possible while the work is underway.
Now, if you’re wondering how long this is going to take, the replacement of the pipes and culverts is expected to wrap up in about two weeks, as long as the weather cooperates. After that phase is done, the traffic shift and detour will come to an end, and the next step will be milling and resurfacing U.S. 158.
During this resurfacing, we can expect single lane closures around where the work is taking place. The whole project is anticipated to be completed by mid-November, again depending on the weather—a very important factor in construction as anyone who has lived in the area knows!
While this work is going on, it’s super important for drivers to stay vigilant. Be sure to use caution, follow all posted signs and signals, and stick to the marked detour routes. This will not only help you navigate through the construction zones but also ensure the safety of the workers on-site.
Once the road improvements are complete, motorists can look forward to a smoother driving experience—something that will benefit both locals and visitors alike. The Whalebone Junction area is a bustling hub, and these upgrades are sure to enhance safety and accessibility for everyone who travels through this part of Nags Head.
So, whether you’re heading to the beach or just passing through, keep this roadwork in mind and plan your journeys accordingly. Here’s to making Nags Head even better for everyone!
