Remembering Philip Scott Harvey: A Life Well-Lived in Kill Devil Hills

Kill Devil Hills, NC – The community is coming together to remember a cherished local figure, Philip Scott Harvey, who passed peacefully at his home on Monday, July 15, 2024. Born on November 3, 1951, in Greenville, NC, to George Philip and Mary Scott Harvey, Philip was a treasured husband, father, and business owner who leaves behind a lasting legacy.

A Loving Family Man

Philip is survived by his beloved wife, Susan, their daughter Virginia “Ginger” Rountree, and her husband John, along with their son Philip Scott Harvey Jr. and his wife Tierney. He also adored his two grandchildren, John Arthur and Julia Scott “Scottie” Rountree, who brought immense joy to his life. His brother, George Harvey, and sister-in-law Ann, are also left with fond memories of a brother who exemplified integrity and love.

A Passion for Antiques and Community

A local business owner for nearly four decades, Philip and Susan founded The Bird Store on the Outer Banks, which has become a beloved staple in the area for 39 years. Known for his deep knowledge of country antiques, folk art, and North Carolina decoys, Philip turned his passion into a thriving business. Visitors would flock to the store not just for the remarkable items, but for the stories and jokes Philip shared with many customers, creating a community atmosphere.

In addition to running The Bird Store, Philip co-authored a book titled “Shorebird Decoys of North Carolina”. This publication highlighted his extensive private collection, showcasing his expertise in decoy identification that many found fascinating.

A Home Full of Memories

For the last 25 years, Philip made his home in Kill Devil Hills, where he developed a passion for fishing. He created countless cherished memories with his family, whether they were out on the water with his long-time fishing team or simply enjoying a day on the dock. His children recall the excitement of chasing bluefish along the beach, and his grandson fondly remembers the vital lessons learned while casting his very first fishing rod under Philip’s watchful guidance.

A Heartfelt Legacy

Beyond his passions and expertise, Philip was known for his easy-going and lighthearted personality. He lived a life filled with honesty and a deep love for his family. Sadly, he passed away just five days shy of what would have been his 50th wedding anniversary with Susan—an incredible milestone that exemplified their remarkable partnership.

Honoring Philip’s Life

A memorial service will be held to celebrate Philip’s life and legacy on Saturday, September 28, 2024, at St. Andrew’s By-the-Sea Episcopal Church in Nags Head, at 11 a.m. Prior to the service, there will be a visitation with the family at 10 a.m. Everyone is invited to join in honoring the memory of a man who touched many lives in our community.

Support and Contributions

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly suggests that memorial contributions be made to St. Andrew’s By-the-Sea, The Preston Robert Tisch Brain Tumor Center at Duke, or a charity of your choice. This is a wonderful opportunity to continue Philip’s legacy of giving back to the community he loved so dearly.

Twiford Funeral Homes, Outer Banks, is assisting the family with the arrangements, and those wishing to share condolences and memories of Philip can do so through the funeral home’s website.

As we reflect on the life of Philip Scott Harvey, we are reminded of the impact one individual can have on a community through love, laughter, hard work, and dedication. He will be dearly missed but fondly remembered in the hearts of all who knew him.
