Residents of the beautiful Outer Banks, North Carolina are in full swing preparing for a tropical storm that is expected to make its presence felt along the Carolina coast. With warnings in place and the threat of flooding looming, communities are bracing for impact, especially in places like Rodanthe, where homes are in a perilous situation due to the relentless power of the Atlantic Ocean.
The North Carolina Department of Emergency Management has issued a tropical storm warning for coastal areas south of Ocracoke Inlet. Winds are forecasted to gust between 40 mph and 50 mph, with small craft advisories also in effect. What’s making matters even more complicated are the king tides, which occur when the full moon’s proximity increases water levels, potentially exacerbating flooding.
Local authorities have taken precautionary measures; the Avon Fishing Pier has been closed for safety checks, and NC 12 on Ocracoke has been shuttered “until further notice.” Ferry service between Hatteras and Ocracoke has also been suspended. As one can imagine, the community is gripping onto the hope that predictions won’t turn into reality.
Residents in Rodanthe are particularly anxious as previous storms have already taken a toll on homes along the coast. Just last month, a home was claimed by the Atlantic due to swells created by Hurricane Ernesto. As of today, there are still several homes that stand precariously close to the edge, in danger of collapsing with the incoming storm. The superintendent of Cape Hatteras National Seashore, Dave Hallac, expressed concern over the potential for further collapses. “Even at low tide, those homes are standing in the water,” he said. “Their pilings are being battered by the waves.”
Local resident Glenn Maurer from Pennsylvania shared a somber reflection on the reality of coastal living: “The architecture is amazing, but Mother Nature is coming to take it back.” It’s a sentiment that resonates deeply with many who have witnessed the changing landscape over the years.
Another visitor, Julie Wilkerson from Chesapeake, reflected on her many visits to Rodanthe, saying, “We’ve been coming here for all of our lives. The dunes used to be three or four stories high, and now they’re just wasting away.” There’s a palpable sadness in her words as she recalls what has happened to this beloved coastal haven.
The weather forecast leaves much to be desired. While there is uncertainty surrounding rainfall amounts, a flood watch remains in place for central and eastern North Carolina through Tuesday afternoon. Predictions estimate rainfall could reach between 1.5 to 2 inches for areas like Kill Devil Hills and up to 3 to 4 inches around Frisco and Ocracoke. The southeast coast could see even higher totals, exceeding five inches.
Reports indicate that morning conditions along NC 12 were passable but not without hazards, as standing water and sand could pose dangers for drivers. Tim Haas from the Department of Transportation urged caution, “We want people to remember to slow down because there will be sand and water on the road, and we’ll have crews out working.”
Tourist Amanda Vazquez, visiting from Pennsylvania, shared her thoughts after witnessing the chaos. “This is amazing; I’m just speechless. It’s cool to see, but I feel bad for the homeowners,” she commented as she observed the crashing waves. For many, the Outer Banks is a cherished getaway, and the hope now is for safe weather and minimal damage.
As the storm approaches, the Outer Banks community is coming together, prepared to face whatever comes their way. The camaraderie amidst the uncertainty is a testament to the resilience of those who call this coastal paradise home.
