Sponsor Our ArticlesAs autumn settles in on the beautiful Outer Banks, locals and visitors alike are adjusting to some important changes on the roads. Beginning Monday, the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) will be reinstalling off-season speed limit signs along the well-known N.C. 12 on Hatteras Island. These changes are welcomed in light of the slower tourism season that accompanies the change in weather.
For those who might not be aware, the seasonal speed limits have returned to 45 mph from the former 35 mph during the tourist-heavy summer months. This adjustment applies particularly to the busy tri-villages of Rodanthe, Waves, Salvo, and Frisco. Roads can get crowded with both vehicles and pedestrians this time of year, and the increased speed limits will allow for a more comfortable driving experience without the hustle and bustle normally associated with summer.
The speed limits will also see changes in several regions of the Cape Hatteras National Seashore, especially in areas close to the Haulover Parking Lot, south of Avon. The NCDOT has emphasized that despite these changes, it’s essential for drivers to remain vigilant on the roads. Many visitors extend their stay into the fall and enjoy what the Outer Banks has to offer—without the peak tourist rush.
Although summer tourism may have slowed down, NCDOT encourages all motorists to drive cautiously. There are still many bicyclists and pedestrians enjoying the fall landscapes, and your awareness can go a long way in ensuring everyone’s safety. The roads remain busy with summer visitors, so maintaining a manageable speed is crucial. Remember, the lower seasonal speed limits will return next May, so it’s vital to stay alert for changing signs as driving conditions evolve.
Fall on the Outer Banks brings a unique charm that draws many to the area for its stunning scenery and cozy atmosphere. As the leaves start to change and temperatures cool down, outdoor activities become even more enjoyable. Whether it’s hiking in one of the many parks, enjoying a quiet day at the beach, or indulging in local tastes at nearby restaurants, there’s no shortage of things to do.
The laid-back vibe of autumn presents an ideal time for families and friends to gather and connect while exploring the incredible landscapes of the Outer Banks. Safe driving practices will ensure that everyone can have fun and enjoy their time away from the rush of daily routines.
As we transition into this picturesque season, be prepared for a few changes. With fewer cars on the road and more opportunities to take in the serenity of the Outer Banks, the region is transforming, and so are its driving conditions. So, whether you’re returning home or just making a quick trip to visit, keep an eye out for those newly installed speed limit signs and stay safe on your journey.
With these new speed limits now in place, we can all look forward to enjoying a wonderful fall season on the Outer Banks. Drive safe, keep your eyes on the road, and embrace all the beauty this time of year has to offer!
