Dare County and the Outer Banks woke up to a stunning surprise on the morning of January 22, 2025. A rare snowfall painted the region white, transforming the usually temperate coastline into a picturesque winter wonderland. With amounts varying across the area, this unexpected snow day has delighted some while causing a bit of chaos for others.
Residents quickly grabbed their rulers and started measuring the snow, and the numbers were impressive. Wright Brothers National Memorial led the pack with an impressive 9.0 inches recorded by 6:20 a.m. Not far behind was Rodanthe, reporting 8.0 inches of snow at 7 a.m.
Other notable reports included Southern Shores with 7.0 inches at 7 a.m. and a lighter 4.0 inches by 9 a.m. Meanwhile, Duck measured 6.5 inches at 8:35 a.m., and Manteo wasn’t far behind with a total accumulation of 6 inches at 8 a.m. Buxton and Manns Harbor rounded out the measurements with 5.8 inches reported at 9:25 a.m. and 8:21 a.m., respectively.
Just to the north in Currituck County, snow lovers also got in on the action, with both Grandy and Knotts Island reporting 7.5 inches at 6 a.m. and 8 a.m. respectively. A winter storm warning had been issued, initially calling for anywhere from 5-8 inches of snow, but the actual amounts surprised everyone and brought joy to the hearts of winter enthusiasts.
While the snowfall provided a beautiful landscape, it also created dangerous road conditions. The recommendation was clear—travel was discouraged as temperatures dipped well below freezing, likely leading to icy roadways. The authorities were taking this seriously; Cape Hatteras National Seashore temporarily closed all ORV ramps due to the treacherous driving conditions from the snow mix.
In line with the hazardous conditions, the North Carolina Ferry Service made the decision to suspend all routes, prioritizing the safety of passengers and crew. This means that many travelers will have to wait a little longer to get to their destinations.
Although snow angels and snowmen were being created, the weather resulted in some practical changes. Dare County Schools, Currituck County Schools, and even Tyrrell County Schools announced they would be closed on Thursday, January 23, 2025. Unfortunately, there will be no remote instruction during this time, meaning students will enjoy a complete day off.
As for local government services, Dare County offices will remain closed on Thursday as well, along with the cancelation of trash collection services. It seems that everyone is getting a well-deserved break!
Even with the chaos, locals have come together in the spirit of community. Emergency management officials have strongly encouraged residents to limit non-essential travel, ensuring that everyone stays safe during this winter event. Local maintenance crews are hard at work, receiving help from NCDOT Division 13 to clear the snow-covered roads throughout Dare County.
Snow days like this are a rare treat for the Outer Banks, with the last major snowfall recorded in 2018. The beauty of fresh fallen snow combined with the enthusiastic spirit of the locals has created a unique atmosphere that many will remember for a long time.
