The bustling atmosphere of Raleigh was alive with excitement on September 21, 2024, as the Outer Banks Senior Games swim team made waves at the North Carolina Senior Games State Finals held at the Pullen Aquatics Center. Sporting a vibrant team spirit, these swimmers showcased not only their skills but also their dedication to health and camaraderie.
The day began with a rush of adrenaline as swimmers warmed up in anticipation of the competition. With a total of 28 teams participating, including strong contenders from Wake, Greensboro, and Cleveland, the atmosphere was charged. The Outer Banks men’s team outperformed everyone, finishing with an impressive score of 415 points, clinching the first place. Meanwhile, the ladies were not far behind, earning a commendable 242 points and securing second place against the very competitive Mecklenburg County team.
Team recruiter and organizer, Harry Schiffman, did a double take when he saw that combining the scores of both teams showed them to have outscored any other male/female team combination. “The results look pretty good,” he said, beaming. “Even if they’re not in the top three, everyone who swam had a part in our success.” And indeed, each participant played their role, contributing to an impressive overall performance.
The journey to this successful day involved a lot of dedication, practice, and teamwork. The team primarily trains at the Outer Banks Family YMCA in Nags Head, practicing year-round with a focus on honing their skills. This summer, many swimmers attended Sunday clinics led by seasoned coaches, Dave Tonneson and Robert Trivette. Their expertise helped athletes refine their techniques in race starts, turns, and finishes, boosting the team’s overall performance.
Tonneson, who competed in multiple events, found himself among the first-place winners. “It was exhilarating to see how the team came together,” he shared after the meet. Other standout participants included John Wallace, David Henzler, George Whitwell, and Greg Florence. For the women, Danielle Foster, Johanna Milchuck, Lisa Minerich, Rita Ayers, and Karen Anderson made significant contributions, racking up points and celebrating their positions on the leaderboard.
The camaraderie among the swimmers shone bright throughout the day. Notably, it was Harry Schiffman’s birthday, and his teammates surprised him with a signed card at the meet. “We may be competing for medals,” he laughed, “but we’re really here for each other.” Schiffman, who regularly encourages newcomers to find their place in the team, noted that the Senior Games are about more than just winning. “The object of the Senior Games is to get people out and off the couch! Swim for their health, that’s the deal, that’s the gold medal!”
Throughout the day, the energy was overwhelming as team members cheered for each other, celebrating not just victories but also each attempt in the pool. The meet featured 31 different events split into 10 age categories, culminating with the arduous 500-yard swim.
Each winner received medals shortly after their races, creating a buzz filled with cheers and applause. To commemorate the event’s 40th anniversary, every participant received a special lapel pin, adding an extra touch of excitement to a day filled with achievements. Additionally, Lisa Minerich provided each team member with quick-dry rally towels that showcased the encouraging mantra: “Swimming for Fun, Health and Team Points.”
While a couple of key swimmers couldn’t attend this year’s finals, they were missed by the group. But the spirit of teamwork and victory prevailed as everyone gave their all. “It was impressive and exciting to watch—this is such a fun group,” remarked Robert Trivette, reflecting on the enthusiasm within the ranks of the Outer Banks Seniors.
The Outer Banks Senior Games swim team continues to welcome new members, encouraging anyone who swims, regardless of skill, to dive into the world of competitive swimming. It’s all about health, friendship, and, of course, a bit of friendly competition. Who knows? You might just discover your inner champion!
