Outer Banks is buzzing with excitement as it gears up to welcome its very own collegiate baseball team, the Outer Banks Flying Dutchmen. That’s right! The Player’s League, known for fostering collegiate baseball talent in North Carolina, has introduced this vibrant new team, which is set to take center stage in the Old North State League (ONSL) commencing summer 2025!

Making Their Mark in the Tidewater Division

The Flying Dutchmen will dive right into the mix, joining the ranks of five other teams competing in the Tidewater Division. This exciting lineup includes:

  • Clayton Clovers
  • Tarboro River Bandits
  • River City Skippers
  • New Bern Southpaws
  • Edenton Steamers

It’s a fantastic group of teams, and the Outer Banks community can’t wait to see how the Flying Dutchmen will compete against them!

The Community’s Touch: A Name to Remember

Selecting a name for a brand-new team is no small feat. In a community-driven effort, local residents suggested names via social media back in December. After careful consideration, eight names were shortlisted, and the winning name was revealed on January 14, 2025. As a cherry on top, the clever individual who suggested the Flying Dutchmen won two free season tickets for the team’s inaugural season. What a way to kick things off!

Meet the Management Team

Now that we have a team name, it’s time to get to know the leaders who will steer the Outer Banks Flying Dutchmen to success. Tom Hoggard has been appointed as the general manager, making him a key player on the management team. A resident of Kill Devil Hills, he accepted the position just before Christmas, igniting hopes for a promising future.

Mason Burns has been selected to lead as the head coach, working hard to finalize the roster by mid-February. With both Hoggard and Burns at the helm, there’s a growing sense of enthusiasm around what’s to come!

What’s Next for the Flying Dutchmen?

As summer 2025 approaches, the excitement continues to build. The Outer Banks Flying Dutchmen will host their games in June and July at the local First Flight High School. For those who are eager to experience all the action, the team guarantees an atmosphere filled with excitement, family fun, and, of course, hauntingly good baseball!

The Search for Players and Host Families

Behind the scenes, the coaching staff is busy scouting and recruiting promising players to join the team and contribute to the local baseball scene. In an extra community effort, the league is also on the lookout for host families willing to provide a home away from home for these players. Interested families can find a sign-up form on the league’s official website.
