Dog Helps Family of Four Escape Fire in the Outer Banks
July 5, 2024, Outer Banks, NC – A heartwarming incident took place late Thursday night in the Outer Banks as a family dog potentially saved the lives of a family of four by alerting them about a fire that had begun enveloping their home. The miraculous story unfolded around 11:30 PM when firefighters were dispatched to deal with a raging two-alarm fire.
Alert Canine to the Rescue
Through the smoke and chaos, it was the family dog that proved to be the unsung hero of the night. The dog was able to alert the family about an ongoing fire on the exterior of the house, possibly preventing a catastrophic incident. As the fire rapidly spread to the second floor, one trapped family member managed to narrowly escape through a broken window, climbing down the second-story deck.
The family was able to safely evacuate thanks in large part to their dog’s vigilance. The ordeal that could have otherwise ended in tragedy was admirably averted, with no injuries reported for the occupants or responding firefighters.
Fire Departments Respond to Call
Members of the Colington Volunteer Fire Department were the first responders on the scene. They were later assisted by additional fire crews from Kill Devil Hills, Nags Head, Kitty Hawk, and Southern Shores. Their combined efforts were successful in controlling and eventually extinguishing the aggressive fire.
Inquiry Into the Fire’s Origin Continues
While the family and their dog are safe following the ordeal, an investigation into the cause of the fire is currently underway by fire officials. More information will be provided as the investigation continues.
