Outer Banks Community Rallies to Aid Western North Carolina After Hurricane Helene

Outer Banks Community Comes Together to Support Western North Carolina After Hurricane Helene

In the wake of Hurricane Helene, the serene coastal charm of the Outer Banks has transformed into a hub of compassion and giving. The Outer Banks Community Foundation (OBCF) has stepped up in a big way, announcing a series of grants aimed at assisting the communities in Western North Carolina that were severely affected by the storm. Just recently, the OBCF Board of Directors cast a unanimous vote to back these crucial disaster recovery efforts.

Grants Galore: A Lifeline for Recovery

So far, the OBCF has allocated over $56,000 in grant awards distributed across eight charitable funds. This generous outpouring of support is a testament to the Outer Banks’ dedication to lending a hand during tough times. When it comes to hurricanes, the Outer Banks has its fair share of experience, and now, with a spirit of solidarity, they’ve decided to extend their support to others in need across North Carolina.

“The Outer Banks is no stranger to hurricanes, and we understand the need for immediate support after a disaster,” shared Jean-Louise Dixon, the Chair of the OBCF Board. “We stand in solidarity with our fellow North Carolinians, and we want them to feel supported by the Outer Banks community in their recovery and rebuilding efforts.” Her words resonate deeply, emphasizing the importance of community resilience in the face of adversity.

Who’s Getting the Support?

The allocated grants are not randomly given but are carefully directed toward organizations poised to make a significant impact. The recipients include the Community Foundation of Western North Carolina, Polk County Community Foundation, Community Foundation of Henderson County, Samaritan’s Purse, and Bounty and Soul, located in Black Mountain, NC. These organizations are set to play pivotal roles in the recovery process, providing essential services and resources to those affected.

The funds come from various sources within the OBCF, including the Disaster Recovery Fund and the Greater Outer Banks Fund. Notably, several donor-advised funds, such as the Simpson-Sharp-Oakes Fund, the Evans Family Fund, and the Just for Today & Tomorrow Endowment Fund, also made significant contributions. Additionally, there were two anonymous donor-advised funds that generously offered their support, showcasing the collective effort of the community to foster recovery.
