Ocracoke Island is still closed as of Tuesday morning, with the Hatteras-Ocracoke ferry service suspended due to severe ocean overwash and water covering the roadway. This situation stems from a series of heavy rains and high tides that have affected the area. The North Carolina Department of Transportation made the call to close N.C. Highway 12 between the ferry terminal and the pony pens on northern Ocracoke Island late Monday night at 8:45 p.m. With the weather conditions being what they are, they will work diligently to clear the roadway throughout Tuesday morning to ensure it is safe to travel.
As the day progresses, bands of heavy rain are expected to shift north and east across the region. Fortunately, forecasters anticipate that the rain will start to taper off for all of the Outer Banks by midnight tonight. However, thanks to the rain from the past week, some areas are especially vulnerable to flooding. The combination of large waves breaking in the surf zone increases the risk of beach erosion and ocean overwash, creating unsafe swimming conditions out there.
Reports of flooding have emerged from Western Hyde County, highlighting the situation’s seriousness. In response, Mattmauskeet Schools are switching to remote learning for the day to keep students safe.
On Hatteras Island, conditions were looking a bit better with N.C. Highway 12 being open and passable by 7:00 a.m. Tuesday morning. However, it is crucial to be cautious, as some standing water and patches of sand remain on the road. Residents and visitors are advised to stay alert, as there is a potential for additional ocean overwash up to 1-3 feet during the next high tide cycle, expected around 7:30 p.m. today.
Due to the possibility of overwash earlier in the day, Cape Hatteras schools operated on a two-hour delay. This precautionary measure is a way to ensure everyone’s safety amid uncertain weather conditions.
If you’re trying to keep up with the current road conditions or any changes that might arise, it’s a good idea to check out DriveNC.gov or visit NCDOT NC 12 on their Facebook page for the most recent updates.
In summary, Ocracoke Island’s situation remains challenging as weather has caused closures and safety precautions. Its residents are working hard to navigate through the conditions, and those on Hatteras Island are being cautious as they manage the leftover effects from the rain and surf. With some costly cleanup efforts ahead for the region, everyone is hopeful for a quick recovery. Stay safe out there!
