A Grand Exhibition Embracing OBX Surfing History Opens at the Museum of the Albemarle

ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. — A fresh wave of enthralling history is set to crash at the Museum of the Albemarle. Starting July 13th, the museum will host a new exhibit titled “Where the Waves Break: Surfing in Northeastern North Carolina”. This exhibition promises to illustrate, with vivid detail, the rich history and culture of the local surfing community.

An Encounter with Wanda Lassiter

We had the privilege to meet the museum curator, Wanda Lassiter, for a sneak peek into the exhibit. “It’s a tight-knit community, a tight-knit culture that we aim to represent. Our goal is for everyone who visits to understand and appreciate this unique culture,” says Lassiter.

Remarkably, the surfing community she speaks of is far from being a monolithic group of youths. “We interacted with a diverse cross-section of people. There were men, women, and children from different age groups. Some had been surfing since their early childhood, while others only picked up the sport in their 40s.”

Paying Homage to Local Legends

The exhibition will honor local legends alongside professional surfers, such as Noah Snyder and Jesse Hines. A prominent figure featured is Patti Hook, an OBX surfing icon. Lassiter reveals, “All these individuals had a say in the narrative we are presenting. Their personal quotes and stories enrich this exhibition.”

A Broad Spectrum of Surf Culture

Moreover, the exhibit is more than a catalog of personal narratives. It also delves into aspects of surf culture like surf etiquette and surfboard crafting. The museum further presents community outreach initiatives, one of them being the admirable Surfing For Autism annual event held on the Outer Banks.

This event, specifically for those affected by autism and their families, demonstrates the therapeutic benefits of surfing, endorsing sports as a medium of empowerment and healing.

A Unique Learning Experience

“We hope you leave this exhibition thinking ‘Wow, I didn’t know any of that.’ Perhaps when you go to the Outer Banks or to any coastal area, you will view surfing in a new light,” concludes Lassiter.

Museum Location

The Museum of the Albemarle is conveniently located on South Water Street in Elizabeth City, NC. It invites all to explore the rich tapestry of local surfing culture and history captured in this unique exhibition.

Conclusion

This compelling new exhibit, “Where the Waves Break: Surfing in Northeastern North Carolina”, is a notable venture by the Museum of the Albemarle to contribute to the historical narrative of their seaside community. It is not just an exhibition; it’s an opportunity for visitors to immerse themselves in the alluring world of surfing culture, celebrating its past, present, and future.
