Rescue team amid floodwaters
In New York and Pennsylvania, the remnants of what was once Tropical Storm Debby have caused significant flooding, prompting high water rescues as emergency responders rush to assist those trapped by rising waters. Heavy rainfall has unleashed flooding predominantly in rural areas south of New York’s Finger Lakes region, with both states declaring states of emergency to address the rapidly deteriorating situation.
As floodwaters surged, first responders launched helicopter and high-water rescues, saving individuals stranded in vehicles and homes. In Steuben County, which shares a border with Pennsylvania, towns including Jasper, Woodhull, and part of Addison were ordered evacuated due to impassable roads and dangerous conditions. Fortunately, by the evening, some evacuation orders began to be lifted as the immediate threat lessened.
The hamlet of Woodhull witnessed alarming flood levels, with streams overflowing and debris flying through the air. Resident Stephanie Waters recounted the terrifying experience, stating, “Hearing the trees hit the bridge was scary.” Despite the dangers, local officials assured residents that the community was safe, but the damage to local businesses was significant.
In the nearby town of Canisteo, many residents like John Anderson observed the alarming rise of floodwaters. “It’s not a slow rise. It’s been very fierce,” he reported, noting how quickly belongings were swept away. The Moss family, who have owned a dairy farm in the area for over 50 years, faced catastrophic damage as nearby structures floated away.
Emergency teams are working tirelessly, with more than a dozen swift-water rescue teams dispatched to help those impacted. Approximately 20 evacuees found temporary shelter at a local high school. In Pennsylvania, heavy flooding forced closures of routes and damaged infrastructure, leading to many communities along the New York border requesting assistance for rescue operations.
Jack Wheeler, the Steuben County manager, reflected on the community’s resilience, recalling that some areas were once again facing similar flooding that they experienced from Tropical Storm Fred just a few years earlier.
With over 150,000 customers without power in both New York and Pennsylvania, efforts are being made to restore electricity. Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency officials have stated that more assistance may be needed as they monitor multiple rescue locations. In surrounding states like Vermont and Georgia, heavy rain is predicted to continue, with communities bracing for potential damages.
The storm’s progression has been alarming, transitioning from a hurricane to a tropical depression, and ultimately influencing weather systems as far north as New England. Meteorologists are keeping a close watch on its aftermath, warning residents in already saturated areas to remain vigilant.
