Nags Head Hosts 13th Surfalorus Film Festival Celebrating Surf Culture and Coastal Community

Nags Head Welcomes Back the Surfalorus Film Festival for its 13th Edition

Grab your popcorn, folks! The delightful beachfront town of Nags Head, North Carolina, is set to roll out its surf-themed red carpet for the much-anticipated Surfalorus Film Festival, running from September 16 to 18, 2024. This vibrant celebration not only showcases stunning surf films but also embraces the rich coastal culture of the Outer Banks!

Surf’s Up: What to Expect

For those who might not have already marked their calendars, this year’s festival boasts a lineup of 13 inspiring films screened over three exhilarating days. And, it’s not just movies—festival-goers can indulge in free oysters provided by the NC Oyster Trail while mingling with local surf aficionados and filmmakers!

Festival Director Zach Hanner expressed his excitement, saying, “The Surfalorus Film Festival is so happy to be back with our ohana in Nags Head and the Outer Banks. At this point, we’ve gotten to know so many of the locals and participants in the ESA contest that we feel the event has really lived up to ‘the gathering of the tribe.’”

The Festival Highlights

The festivities kick off on Monday evening at 6 PM, featuring live music from none other than Zach Hanner himself, along with the charming band CarolinAloha. Tonight’s entertainment leads into the opening film, The Cigarette Surfboard, directed by Ben Judkins. This unique documentary dives into the surprising intersection of discarded cigarette butts and surfing, turning a light on the importance of ocean stewardship.

And if you’re keen on engaging further, stick around for a Q&A session with Judkins, where he’ll also showcase some of the remarkable cigarette surfboards featured in the film. It’s a perfect chance to deepen your understanding while celebrating creativity!

More Films and Special Presentations

On Tuesday, September 17th, catch the inspiring documentary Walkabout: The Songlines of Surfing, spotlighting the heartfelt friendship between pro surfer Robbie Page and legend Arnaud Mestelan, kicking off screenings at 4:30 PM. Following this touching story, visit with special guests from the NC Oyster Trail—like Tyler Hofe from Kinnakeet Oyster Company—to explore the thriving community of shellfish farmers, paired with a tasty oyster sampling!

The evening closes out with a selection of short films featuring the one-of-a-kind journey of Portuguese-born Olympic surfing champion Camilla Kemp in CAMILLA, and the breathtaking views of Tahiti in The Children of Teahupo’o from acclaimed photographer Tim McKenna.

Wrapping Up with Awards and Recognition

As we reach the final day of the festival, Wednesday, September 18th, the tantalizing adventure of musican and athlete Goth Babe in Lola sets the stage for the evening’s festivities. This day promises excitement and anticipation with the closing night award ceremony, wrapping up the festival with a heartfelt celebration of surf culture and community.

The festival culminates with a poignant look at the life of underground surfing legend Colin Smith in the short film Channel Man – Col’s Story, which promises to leave an impact on its viewers.
