In a strange twist of events, a mysterious structure that bears a striking resemblance to a castle has emerged from an ancient sand dune on a beach in North Carolina’s Outer Banks. The intriguing structure, previously hidden for several years, has surfaced, adding a unique layer of intrigue to the popular tourist spot, famed for its sun, sea, and adventure.
The Outer Banks, renowned for their scenic vistas and rich history, attracts thousands of visitors each summer and has even inspired the popular Netflix series ‘Outer Banks’ with its treasure-hunting narrative.
A standout attraction of the Outer Banks is Jockey’s Ridge, the home to the East Coast’s largest sand dunes. Spanning over 400 acres, these dunes serve as a popular spot for various activities, including hang gliding and sandboarding. Intriguingly, as the sands shift under the influence of wind and sun, they often reveal hidden objects, just like the mysterious castle unearthed in the summer of 2024.
Contrary to its royal appearance, the castle, in reality, is not a castle built with sand, nor is it a bona fide castle. Instead, it’s much more humble in its origin – the remains of a miniature golf course constructed in the 1970s. Site of much controversy during its establishment, the miniature golf course faced resistance from locals and environmentalists against the idea of development on the dunes. Nevertheless, it was designed to attract visitors to these unique sand formations.
Over time, erosion and nature have impacted the structure, leading to dead plants growing around it, parts crumbling away, and its colors fading. Regardless of these factors, the ‘castle’ still stands impressive, towering at a height of 8 to 10 feet.
Despite the resistance it faced, the miniature golf course was built in the 1970s. However, the relentless shifting sands completely swallowed the course by the 1980s. Eventually, the developers admitted defeat, abandoning their plans and selling the land to the state of North Carolina.
Now, with the ‘castle’, more specifically the hole themed around a castle, unearthed again, much curiosity abounds regarding the fate of the rest of the course. Historic records reveal that the course once featured holes modeled around sea monsters, a ship, an octopus, and even a cobra. Yet, the present location of these structures remains a mystery, hence leaving their discovery to the mercy of the natural elements and time.
The continuously shifting sands of Jockey’s Ridge continue to modify the landscape, indicating the hidden treasures that could still be buried. These ancient dunes, believed to be thousands of years old, continually engage with the sun, wind, and time, shaping and reshaping the land. The mysterious castle’s emergence in 2024 only goes to show that more secrets from the past could be revealed in the future.
