Manteo Motorcycle Chase Ends with Arrest of Suspected Thief

Manteo’s Midnight Motorcycle Chase: A Community Incident Unfolds

In the early hours of October 8, 2024, the usually calm streets of Manteo, North Carolina transformed into the scene of a thrilling motorcycle chase. Deputies from the B-District were on patrol when they noticed a motorcycle speeding and zigzagging through traffic, overtaking other vehicles in an alarming manner. Aware of the laws of the road – and understanding that safety is paramount – they quickly attempted to stop the reckless rider.

A Brief Pursuit

It didn’t take long for things to escalate. The motorcyclist, determined to evade capture, sped away from the deputies, leading them on a short, but intense chase. The adrenaline was high, not just for the deputies but for anyone lucky enough to witness the unfolding scene. The pursuit reached its conclusion in the parking lot of the Dare County Justice Center, where the rider was apprehended without further incident. It was a surprising twist of events considering how peaceful Manteo typically is during those late night hours!

Who Is the Rider?

Upon investigation, officers discovered that the motorcycle wasn’t just any bike but had actually been reported stolen from Virginia. The driver behind this wild ride was identified as Michael T. Harris Jr., 32, a resident of Camden, North Carolina. It turns out his late-night adventure will be remembered for all the wrong reasons, as he now faces a slew of charges.

Charges Piling Up

Michael has been charged with a variety of offenses, including:

  • Felony Fleeing/Eluding Arrest with a Motor Vehicle
  • Possession of a Stolen Motor Vehicle
  • Misdemeanor Reckless Driving to Endanger
  • Fictitious or Altered Registration Tag
  • No Liability Insurance
  • No Operators License
  • Exceeding Posted Speed Limit
  • Improper Passing

With so many infractions, it’s safe to say that the night left Harris in quite the predicament! Currently, he is held in custody with a 48-hour hold for his bond.

Community Support

The Manteo Police Department was quick to lend assistance in this incident, showcasing the importance of collaboration in keeping our community safe. The Dare County Sheriff’s Office emphasizes its ongoing mission of ensuring the safety and security of the area. They also encourage the public to stay vigilant. If anyone has information related to any criminal activity, they are urged to reach out to the Dare County Sheriff’s Office at 252-475-5980 or the Dare County Communications Center at 252-473-3444.

In Other News

While the night was eventful in Manteo, let’s not forget the lighter side of life in the area! Just a day earlier, a unique story emerged from Perquimans County where a local man won a staggering $150,000 prize thanks to a pumpkin! What an incredible coincidence – not every day you hear about a vegetable bringing good fortune!

In summary, as Manteo continues to be a tight-knit community, it’s heartening to see law enforcement taking proactive measures to maintain peace and security. Whether it’s a thrilling police chase or a delightful pumpkin story, there’s never a dull moment in our beautiful corner of North Carolina!
