Manatees Spotted in Southern Shores: Signs of Warmer Weather Ahead

Manatees Spotted in Southern Shores: Signs of Warmer Weather Ahead

Outer Banks, N.C. — Earlier this Thursday morning, a lovely surprise greeted early risers in Southern Shores! A group of friendly manatees was spotted swimming through the canals, marking a delightful sight for locals and visitors alike. These gentle giants of the water have begun their journey back to the cozy waters of Florida, and it looks like they are making a pit stop right here in our beautiful Outer Banks.

A Dance with Nature

“Hopefully, they are heading south,” said a local marine expert, Marina Doshkov, who serves as the Marine Mammal Stranding Coordinator for the North Carolina Aquariums and Jennette’s Pier. Her observation reveals how the changing seasons impact these magnificent creatures. She indicates that the current water temperatures are safe, albeit just a bit borderline for manatees. This seasonal migration is all part of their life cycle, as they seek out warmer areas to thrive.

The Manatee’s Journey

Manatees are often referred to as “sea cows” due to their hefty bodies and gentle demeanor. These animals can be found mostly in shallow coastal areas, feeding on sea grasses and other aquatic plants. As the seasons change, they are known to travel great distances in search of warmer waters, making their journey a spectacle worth witnessing.

If you’re lucky enough to spot one of these delightful creatures, consider giving the Outer Banks Marine Mammal Stranding Network a call at 252-455-9654. Reports of sightings help monitor their populations and health, making every call invaluable for conservation efforts.

Community Excitement

Local residents are buzzing with excitement. With every sighting, the community feels a little closer to nature. “Seeing manatees is always a treat,” shared one enthusiastic local. “It’s a reminder of the beautiful marine life we have right here in our backyard.”

The delight doesn’t just stop at the thrill of seeing a manatee. Residents and visitors are encouraged to come together to ensure the safety and well-being of these marine mammals as they glide through our canals. It’s not just about enjoying the view, but also about protecting their habitats and ensuring they continue to grace our waters for years to come.

Conservation Matters

As lovely as it is to see these animals, it’s important to remember the responsibilities that come with their presence. Respecting their space and habitat is key. Individuals are reminded to keep a safe distance and refrain from disturbing them while they relax and swim. It’s all about creating a peaceful coexistence between humans and wildlife.

The Outer Banks community has a rich history of embracing its natural surroundings. With the arrival of warm weather, more wildlife, including these serene manatees, will likely make appearances. So, keep your eyes peeled! You never know what amazing adventure might come by; after all, nature has a way of surprising us when we least expect it.

Get Involved

For those of you inspired to play a part in marine conservation, consider joining local groups, attending workshops, or even participating in beach clean-ups. Every small effort can lead to significant changes in preserving the environments that our beloved marine life calls home.

As we welcome the manatees back to our waters, let’s all take a moment to appreciate these beautiful creatures and the warm weather they promise. Here’s to more sightings, sunny days, and the magic of nature in the Outer Banks!
