Southern Shores, N.C. — What a surprise it was for locals and visitors alike this past Saturday when six gentle giants were spotted grazing in the beautiful currents of Currituck Sound! Yes, you heard it right! Those magnificent manatees, known for their calm demeanor and unique appearance, made an unexpected appearance on their long migration journey south. It’s a sight that one doesn’t see every day here in our lovely Outer Banks.
Typically, manatees don’t venture as far north as North Carolina. They usually prefer the warm, inviting waters of Florida during the winter months. But this time, warmer temperatures have lured them a bit further up the coast. According to Marina Doshkov, the Marine Mammal Stranding Coordinator at Jennette’s Pier, these guys might just be taking a slight detour before heading back to Florida.
Speaking on Monday, Doshkov shared her hopes for the sea cows: “Hopefully, they are heading south,” she said. Here’s the catch, though — while the water temperature was a comfortable 69 degrees on Saturday, it’s predicted to start dropping as the week goes on. And we all know that manatees prefer their watery homes to be on the warmer side!
According to Doshkov, the temperatures are currently safe, but they’re on the cusp of becoming challenging for these lovely marine mammals. With predictions suggesting that midweek will bring cooler waters, it’s crucial for these gentle creatures to make their way back home swiftly.
But wait! There’s more to it! If you happen to see a manatee, Doshkov offers some very handy tips. First and foremost, it’s important to keep a respectful distance. Manatees are peaceful creatures, but they can be startled easily—so no sudden moves, folks! Also, refrain from trying to feed or touch them. They are wild animals, after all.
As the seasons change, sightings of manatees are a reminder that these creatures face many challenges due to climate changes and habitat loss. Each sighting is special, and it’s a golden opportunity for everyone to appreciate the beauty of nature. Local communities can come together to ensure the well-being of marine life by respecting their habitats.
We’ve all heard of majestic whales and dolphins cruising through our gorgeous coastlines, but let’s not forget about the incredible manatees, too! Though their visit might be brief, this rare encounter in Southern Shores serves as a fantastic reminder of the diverse wildlife that graces our waters.
So, keep your eyes peeled as you stroll along the shore, and maybe you’ll catch a glimpse of these fascinating creatures making their way south. Here’s hoping that as the weather shifts, our new aquatic friends will find the warm waters they’re longing for. Happy observing!
