Kill Devil Hills, NC, is in a state of deep reflection and remembrance as the community bids farewell to JoAnne Norris Junkin, a devoted wife, mother, and friend who passed away peacefully at home on August 3, 2024, at the age of 73. Her passing has left a void that many are feeling, but JoAnne’s vibrant spirit and generous heart continue to grace the lives of those she touched.
Born on December 25, 1950, in Raleigh, NC, JoAnne’s life unfolded like a beautiful story full of love, commitment, and service. Throughout her marriage to Joe Wade Junkin, a long-serving Navy man, JoAnne embraced the lifestyle that came with military family life. Together with Joe and their three children, they traveled across the country, calling different places home for more than two decades. JoAnne was not just a supportive Navy wife; she was a beacon of strength to her family during times of transition.
In her professional life, JoAnne dedicated herself to her work as a defense contractor. After a fulfilling career, she retired in 2013, paving the way for a new chapter in her life. Retirement brought JoAnne and Joe to their dream beach home in Kill Devil Hills. It was here that they created a sanctuary, lovingly known as J&J’s Beach Shack, where family gatherings spilled over with laughter and love during summer vacations, Thanksgivings, Christmases, and cozy weekends.
JoAnne’s passing marks the end of a remarkable journey. She is preceded in death by her beloved husband of 50 years, Joe Wade Junkin; her daughter, Candace Junkin; and her caring parents Marie and Nello Norris. Despite these profound losses, JoAnne’s love lives on through her surviving family – her daughter, Kimberly (Charles) Rosenfield; son, Christopher (Karen) Junkin; son-in-law Benjamin McKay; sister Patricia (Richard) Paschall; and brother Douglas (Jane) Norris.
Moreover, her legacy shines brightly through her cherished nine grandchildren: Ashli (Sean) Regan, Sarah (Courtney) Ziolkowski, Tori Junkin, William Knight, Wade Junkin, Zachary Rosenfield, Paula McKay, Laura McKay, and Gabrielle McKay. The newest addition to the brood, her great-grandson Connor Regan, will undoubtedly carry forward the lessons of compassion and kindness JoAnne instilled in her family.
Known for her warm hospitality, JoAnne opened her home to everyone, ensuring that each guest felt welcomed and loved. This space brimmed with the aroma of her cooking and a sense of belonging that drew many into her orbit. As a devoted Christian, she exemplified Christ’s love through her immense generosity and unwavering care for others, never hesitating to lend a helping hand or a comforting word.
JoAnne was not only a lover of people, but she also held a deep affection for animals and often rescued dogs and cats, pouring her love and attention onto her furry friends. Interestingly, her favorite holiday was Christmas—an occasion she planned for years in advance, aiming to create magical memories for her children and grandchildren, who enjoyed celebrating her birthday alongside the festive season.
JoAnne’s impact on the community was irreplaceable. Friends, family, and all who had the privilege of knowing her will hold dear their memories of her laughter, her cards sprinkled with confetti, and her unwavering support. Those left behind know that JoAnne’s spirit of love and connection will continue to inspire everyone she touched.
A memorial service celebrating her remarkable life will be announced in due course. She will find her final resting place alongside Joe at Arlington National Cemetery, a fitting tribute to a life dedicated to service and love.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in JoAnne’s honor to the Parkinson’s Disease Foundation or your local ASPCA, helping to support those causes dear to her heart.
