Residents of Kill Devil Hills, gather ’round because we have some news about the Dare County Youth Center gymnasium you won’t want to miss! If you’ve been looking forward to getting back to your favorite volleyball or pickleball matches starting on Monday, November 18, 2024, we’ve got a little twist in the tale. The reopening has been delayed due to some unexpected hiccups in the ongoing roof replacement project.
The gymnasium was initially slated for a brief three-week closure, starting on October 28, 2024, but as luck would have it, the plans have faced a few minor setbacks. Now, instead of welcoming back community members on the originally scheduled date, the gym will stay closed while the contractor works to get everything in tip-top shape. So, if you were planning to hit the courts, hold that thought for just a bit longer!
Due to the roof work still being in progress, all activities in the gym—yes, that means both volleyball and pickleball—are *officially* canceled for the entire week leading up to that date and, unfortunately, on November 18 as well. It’s essential to ensure that the space is safe and sound for all who use it!
Now, here’s a silver lining! The after-school program will take place in the multipurpose rooms at the Dare County Youth Center. So, no need to worry; the kids can still have their fun and learn! If you have any meetings scheduled in those multipurpose rooms, they will proceed as planned without disruption.
The good news is that if all goes smoothly, the gym may reopen as expected on Tuesday, November 19, 2024. However, do keep your ears open for any updates, as additional closures might be necessary to wrap things up. The Dare County Parks and Recreation Department promises to keep everyone in the loop regarding any further changes.
While it can be frustrating to have plans changed, the Parks and Recreation Department appreciates everyone’s patience and understanding during this essential upgrade. After all, improvements like these are crucial for maintaining a welcoming and functional recreational environment.
And it doesn’t end there! Just after the gym’s reopening, a parking lot repaving project is set to take place at the Family Recreation Park. From noon on Friday, November 22 until 8:30 a.m. on Monday, November 25, 2024, the entire park, including the Dare County Youth Center, will be closed. This includes the cancellation of all regularly scheduled programs and activities during this time.
If you fancy a game of tennis, good news—those courts will remain open, but keep in mind that parking on-site won’t be available, so plan accordingly! You can still find after-hours public parking nearby at several accessible locations, which are Dare County Water Department, Kill Devil Hills Library, Thomas A. Baum Senior Center, and First Flight Elementary School.
Questions? Need more info? Feel free to reach out to the Dare County Parks and Recreation Department’s Northern Beach Division office at 252-475-5920. They’re always ready to help!
So hang tight, Kill Devil Hills residents! Exciting updates are on the way, and we can’t wait to see everyone back at the gym very soon!
