The incidents occurred near milepost 20, where a horse known as Bullwinkle, a 10-year-old stallion, was struck by a UTV (Utility Task Vehicle). After the collision, the driver of the vehicle fled the scene, prompting a response from the sheriff’s office.
Authorities identified the driver as Porter Williamson, a 57-year-old man from Chesapeake. He was charged with resisting, delaying, and obstructing law enforcement (RDO) and issued a bond of $10,000. Reports also indicate that as deputies approached him while towing the UTV, he attempted to flee but was apprehended shortly thereafter.
The sheriff’s office also charged Rhonda Williamson, aged 62, with RDO for providing false information to the police. She received a bond of $5,000 in connection to the case. The specific relationship between Porter and Rhonda was not disclosed.
According to the Corolla Wild Horse Fund, Bullwinkle suffered from severe injuries, including significant skin trauma and a broken leg, which led to his euthanasia following the incident. The organization described the various traumas sustained by the horse, emphasizing the heartbreaking nature of the situation.
The community has expressed shock and sadness over the killing of Bullwinkle. Local residents and animal advocates are calling for stricter regulations regarding driving on the beach to protect the wildlife in the area.
This incident highlights the ongoing concerns about the safety of both animals and people in the Outer Banks, where incidents like this have occurred in the past.
