For those of us lucky enough to call or visit Outer Banks, we know there’s truly no place like it. The region is renowned for its gorgeous coastlines, perfect surf, and strong community vibes. Think of sun-soaked days spent riding waves and cozy evenings filled with stories shared among friends. It’s a spot that’s been cherished by surfers for generations.
But it’s not just about the surf—a visit to the Outer Banks reminds us of the raw power and unpredictability of nature. Many residents have witnessed firsthand the damage caused by fierce storms that threaten our sandy shores, including a recent event where a home in Rodanthe slipped into the ocean. Life here is an adventure filled with ups and downs!
Reflecting on my own journey in the Outer Banks, it all began as a summer gig tossing pizzas at Lisa’s Pizzeria in Rodanthe. It was there I formed deep bonds with a community that felt like family. The camaraderie was palpable, especially when the team would chase waves together once our shifts wrapped up. I’ll never forget the joy of riding in a stretch Lincoln Navigator to see The Pat McGee Band play—an experience that truly encapsulates the heart of the Outer Banks.
Filmmakers Jordan Montgomery and Clay Mein from Abyss Films took it upon themselves to document this incredible lifestyle with a recent film that’s stirring quite a bit of buzz. Their film isn’t just about surfing—it’s a heartfelt tribute addressing the beauty of the Outer Banks and the challenges we face, such as overdevelopment and the relentless force of Mother Nature. “It’s about connecting with the ocean and understanding the local way of life,” said Montgomery, hoping to shine a light on why this area is so uniquely special.
As they embarked on this project, Montgomery and Mein faced the tough challenge of portraying the tight-knit surf community authentically. “It’s about more than just surfing,” Clay Mein emphasized. He wanted to honor the genuine struggles and the unrefined joys of life here. Both filmmakers strived to embed the essence of the community into the film and to ensure those who live in the Outer Banks feel truly recognized and appreciated.
At the sold-out premiere, the energy was electric! A big shoutout to local favorites like Surfin’ Spoon and, of course, Lisa’s Pizzeria, for their support. And a heartfelt thank you to White Claw for backing the HOMETOWN HYPE initiative. This whole project symbolizes gratitude for the warmth and heart found in the Outer Banks, embodying a humble high five to everyone who contributed.
So, let’s rally behind this amazing community! Jump online and cast your vote in the HOMETOWN HYPE competition—let’s help highlight the incredible individuals and businesses that make the Outer Banks so special. Every vote is a step towards celebrating our community’s heart and soul!
