Greenville Gets a Boost for Mental Health Awareness on R U Ok? Day

In a heartfelt initiative aimed at fostering a caring culture, East Carolina University (ECU) is joining forces with an array of local organizations to shine a light on mental health awareness this year. The collaboration emphasizes the significance of emotional well-being and meaningful conversations through the widely recognized R U Ok? Day.

Community Connections

Among the local partners rallying behind this noble cause are the Greenville–Pitt County Chamber of Commerce, Pitt Community College, Pitt County government, Pitt County Schools, and the bustling city of Greenville. Notably, significant employers such as Hyster-Yale Material Handling, Orthopedics East, and Attendas are stepping up to get involved in this heartening initiative.

R U Ok? Day: More Than Just One Day

R U Ok? Day aims to instill a sense of connection and promote awareness surrounding mental health issues. The events kick off as part of ECU’s vibrant “You Matter” week, which commenced earlier this week. It’s a time for students, staff, and the community to come together, reflecting on the importance of well-being.

Official Recognition in Pitt County

In recognition of its significance, the Pitt County Commissioners will declare March 26th as R U Ok? Day throughout the county. This official declaration only adds to the event’s gravity, encouraging citizens to prioritize mental health.

Exciting Activities Await

ECU’s own Associate Chancellor of Health and Well-Being, LaNika Wright, along with student Jackson Bostic, is leading the charge to organize several engaging activities at the university. These initiatives include mental health check-ins, a cozy movie night, and a vibrant Health and Well-Being Fair happening today!

  • The main campus will host its Health and Well-Being Fair from 12 to 2 p.m.
  • Meanwhile, the Health Sciences Campus will hold their fair from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
  • An affirmation station will be available on the campus of Pitt Community College from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., allowing attendees to engage in positive self-talk and encouragement!

Focus on Ongoing Support

Beyond the day’s festivities, additional events will be sprinkled throughout the week, including a student mental health conversation at Pitt Community College. It’s a prime opportunity for individuals to learn and share experiences regarding mental health challenges.

Resources Beyond the Event

The support for R U Ok? extends well beyond just organized events. A wealth of resources is available via its dedicated website to provide ongoing information and support. This ensures everyone has the opportunity to be involved and informed, giving people the tools they need to look out for themselves and others.

Get Involved!

Community spirit is at the heart of this initiative, encouraging neighbors and friends to check in with one another. Everyone has a role to play for mental health awareness—so don’t miss out on promoting the hashtag #RUOKDayPC online. Share your thoughts, stories, and reflections to help build a supportive community where everyone feels valued and heard.
