Exciting Updates from Kill Devil Hills: Family Recreation Park to Close for Upgrades!

Attention Kill Devil Hills residents! Get ready for some important updates about our beloved Family Recreation Park. The Dare County Parks and Recreation Department has announced that starting Friday, November 22, 2024 at 12 p.m., the park and its facilities will be undergoing some much-needed upgrades. This means that the Dare County Youth Center, along with other facilities and fields at 602 Mustian Street, will be closed through Monday, November 25, 2024.

What does this mean for you?

During this period, all regularly scheduled programs and activities will be canceled, including our favorite pickleball and the after-school program. Now, don’t worry just yet! While the parking lot revamp is taking place, our fantastic tennis courts will remain open and accessible. However, please note that you won’t be able to find any onsite parking. The good news? There are plenty of alternative parking spots in the vicinity! For your convenience, you can park at:

  • Barefoot & Water Department (600 Mustian Street)
  • Kill Devil Hills Library (400 Mustian Street)
  • Thomas A. Baum Senior Center (300 Mustian Street)
  • First Flight Elementary School (107 Veterans Drive)

Project Timing and Updates

As mentioned earlier, this parking lot repaving is just one part of a larger plan to enhance our park facilities. And you might remember that the gymnasium inside the Dare County Youth Center has been undergoing a roof replacement project since October 28, 2024. This project is scheduled for completion on November 18, 2024, after which activities like volleyball and pickleball will resume as usual. Just in time for our fun Thanksgiving festivities!

Help Shape the Future of Our Parks!

But that’s not all, folks! The Dare County Parks and Recreation Department is calling on you—yes, you! They want your feedback to help shape the future of recreational offerings in our community. There’s a needs assessment survey currently open, and you have until November 22, 2024 to make your opinions known. Whether you have big ideas or just a few thoughts on what you’d like to see at our parks, your input is invaluable.

We encourage all Dare County residents and property owners to hop on over and provide your thoughts before the opportunity closes. Just click here to participate in the survey. Your thoughts could guide future parks and recreation projects, so don’t miss out!

Showing Appreciation

The Dare County Parks and Recreation Department would like to extend their heartfelt appreciation for the community’s patience and understanding as these necessary improvements are underway. They believe that these changes will not only make Family Recreation Park look better but will also enhance your experience when using the park facilities. It’s all about making our community a better place, one upgrade at a time!

For any questions or additional information, feel free to give the Northern Beach Division office a call at 252-475-5920. They will be more than happy to assist you!

So, mark your calendars and prepare for a little construction disruption! The upgrades at Family Recreation Park promise to add plenty of value for everyone in Kill Devil Hills. Let’s all get ready to enjoy even more fun activities once the work is complete!
