Remembering Ellen Berg: A Life of Caring and Creativity in Kitty Hawk
Kitty Hawk, NC – The community of Kitty Hawk is mourning the loss of a cherished soul, Ellen Berg, who passed away on August 9, 2024, after a courageous two-year battle with liver and pancreas failure. Ellen, who graced this world on May 20, 1955, in Evanston, Illinois, touched countless lives throughout her journey.
An Early Passion for Caring
From an early age, Ellen exhibited a deep compassion for others. After completing high school, she pursued her nursing degree and began her career in the intensive care unit at Cook County Hospital in Illinois. Her dedication to her patients was evident, but Ellen’s journey was just beginning.
A Move to Bethesda and Groundbreaking Work
Several years later, Ellen made a significant move to Bethesda, Maryland, where she had the incredible opportunity to work alongside Dr. Anthony Fauci at the National Institutes of Health. Here, she provided exceptional care for some of the country’s earliest AIDS patients, a daunting task during a time when no one was surviving this terrifying diagnosis. Ellen’s heartache during this time motivated her to seek a new path.
A New Chapter in the Outer Banks
In 1980, Ellen found her way to the breathtaking shores of Kitty Hawk. Though her nursing skills were invaluable, she soon realized the local scene offered more opportunities in the restaurant industry. She began her journey at By George’s and went on to work at Gandolf’s and Kitty Hawk Pier. However, it wasn’t long before her cooking skills became legendary.
The Culinary Queen of the Outer Banks
Ellen’s passion for cooking reached new heights when she became the chef at Carlin Pearls, showcasing her culinary creativity. Ellen could whip up some of the most mouth-watering dishes, quickly making herself a beloved figure in the local food scene. But her talents didn’t stop there; she was also a successful woodworking artist alongside her husband, Victor.
A Lifelong Partnership
In 1984, Ellen met Victor Berg, and the two married that same year. Together, they co-owned and operated the Outer Banks Waterfowl Guide Service, one of the oldest and largest duck guiding operations in the region, established in 1977. Their partnership flourished not only in business but also in art, where they showcased their woodworking talents at various art shows along the east coast since 1985.
Starving Artist Christmas Show
Ellen and Victor created a popular tradition known as the “Starving Artist” Christmas show, which they hosted in their home for an astonishing 32 years. Imagine gathering over 200 to 300 guests for an afternoon of art appreciation and delicious wild game recipes expertly prepared by Ellen herself! She had a flair for making everyone feel welcome and loved, and those unforgettable gatherings will certainly be remembered.
A Legacy of Love
Ellen Berg leaves behind a rich legacy, survived by her devoted husband Victor, her son Jonathan of Florida, two brothers, Ed and Nick, and a vast extended family. Her warmth, creativity, and indomitable spirit will be sorely missed in Kitty Hawk and beyond.
Final Farewell
Ellen’s wishes for cremation will be honored, and plans for a memorial celebration in September are in the works. Friends and loved ones are encouraged to check for updates and share their condolences with the Berg family at the memorial site.
The charming spirit of Ellen Berg will forever remain a beacon of light in the community. Her contributions to nursing, culinary arts, and the local arts scene reflect a life lived fully, and she will always be remembered for her unwavering kindness and creativity.
