Four young men from Elizabeth City were arrested this past Tuesday in Nags Head, sparking intense local discussion about crime rates and law enforcement efforts in the area.
The Dare County Sheriff’s Office and Nags Head Police Department were conducting a routine traffic stop on the evening of April 9, 2024. The incident took place near Sonic in Nags Head, where the authorities flagged down a vehicle due to a registration violation at around 5:28 p.m.
During the course of the traffic stop, law enforcement officers discovered three handguns and a quantity of marijuana. One of the seized handguns had been illegally converted to a fully automatic weapon.

However, officials from both the Dare County Sheriff’s Office and Nags Head Police Department commended the work of the officers involved in the stop and stressed the role of community vigilance in preventing these kinds of incidents.
Roberts is the second oldest of the group. At 21 years old, he too faces charges of possessing a weapon of mass destruction. Currently held in jail, Roberts has a secured bond set at $75,000.
Jones, who is 22 years old, faces the most severe bundle of charges among the group. These include felony possession of a weapon of mass destruction, possession of a firearm by a felon, and resisting, delaying, and obstructing an officer. His secured bond is set at $152,000.
Coley is the youngest in the group, at just 20 years of age. In addition to a charge of possession of a weapon of mass destruction, he also faces a charge for carrying a concealed weapon and one for marijuana possession. He was held on a $64,000 secured bond.
