On Thursday, November 21, 2024, the East Carolina University (ECU) men’s basketball team, boasting a perfect record of 4-0, will kick off the Boardwalk Battle tournament in sunny Daytona Beach, Florida. The Pirates are eager to extend their winning streak as they embark on their first tournament of the season, aiming for a championship before transitioning into a longer season ahead.
This season marks the second time in four years that ECU has started off with four consecutive wins, the last instance occurring during the 2020-21 COVID-19 shortened season. With an eye on maintaining their momentum, the team recently triumphed in a thrilling game against George Mason University, clinching the victory after double overtime. Senior guard RJ Felton shined in that match, posting 27 points, 8 rebounds, 2 assists, and 4 steals, leading to his recognition as the AAC Player of the Week.
Felton, who is averaging just over 23 points per game this season, has also made history by entering the top 10 of ECU’s all-time men’s basketball scoring list, now holding 1,247 points in his career. Head Coach Mike Schwartz praised Felton’s leadership, saying, “Identity wins are the best wins, that’s ECU basketball, that’s Pirates. That’s what we do, we win, protect the home court.”
The Pirates are set to face off against a formidable opponent in Jacksonville State University (3-1) in their opening game. Jacksonville State kicked off their season with an overwhelming victory against LaGrange College, winning 112-48. They have since defeated notable teams like Georgia State University and Coastal Carolina University. This upcoming contest promises to be a hard-fought battle.
The Boardwalk Battle consists of eight teams, each competing in a round-robin format. Following their initial games, victorious teams will advance to the semi-finals, while those who lose will enter a consolation bracket. This is the first edition of the Boardwalk Battle and includes teams such as the University of South Carolina, James Madison University, and Toledo University, ensuring a competitive environment.
This tournament represents a significant test for ECU, as it marks their inaugural neutral-site games this year. These matches are crucial for the team to evaluate their performance and adjust their strategies for the challenging season ahead. Coach Schwartz will focus on discovering the most effective rotations against various opponents, an essential component before facing lengthy stretches of gameplay.
For fans eager to follow the action, the tournament games will be broadcast live on BallerTV and on the radio at 107.9 WNCT. As the Pirates embark on this exciting journey in Florida, supporters are looking forward to witnessing their continued success on the court.
With a strong start to the season and an exceptional talent in RJ Felton, the ECU Pirates are poised to make a significant impact in the Boardwalk Battle. As they prepare to take on strong competition, all eyes will be on them to deliver a spirited performance in their quest for tournament success.
