Dare County Sheriff’s Office Reports Range of Crimes in April 2024

Dare County, North Carolina – The month of April was a busy one for the Dare County Sheriff’s Office as they fielded a variety of criminal activities, including property crimes, arson, and scams.

Overview of April’s Criminal Activities

The Dare County Sheriff’s Office has relayed the following criminal reports:

Obtaining Property by False Pretenses

On April 4, 2024, an issue arose in the 200 block of Kitty Hawk Bay Drive, Colington. The complaint involved airline miles being used without the owner’s permission. Fortunately, the airline has been handling the case.

Another case related to obtaining property by false pretenses popped up on April 15, 2024, in Avon. A reprehensible phone scam saw a scammer, posing as an FBI agent, trick a business clerk into sending money via Green Dot cards. This case remains under investigation.

Breaking and Entering Activities

April 9, 2024 saw a breaking and entering incident occurring in Colington. Deputies responded to a domestic dispute but noticed signs of a break-in at a neighboring residence. Upon investigation, a suspect was identified and charges have been filed.

On April 14, 2024, in Roanoke Island, witnesses reportedly observed a perpetrator breaking into cars. A prompt search of the local area resulted in the subsequent apprehension and arrest of the suspect.

Several days later, on April 29, 2024, another breaking and entering crime was reported. This time, a drone and tablet were reported stolen from a vacation rental located on Brooks Court, Frisco.

Arson Incident

In a particularly disturbing event on April 14, emergency services responded to an arson crime at Rodanthe on NC 12 Hwy. A portable restroom was deliberately set ablaze and was rendered completely unusable. Following a sweeping investigation, a suspect was later identified and taken into custody.

Exploiting Elder Trust

One noteworthy incident of elder exploitation was reported on April 26, 2024, in Colington. An elderly resident had been lured into a shipping scam, leading them to innocently send money overseas. The case continues to be investigated.
