Large Item Pickup Service Begins in Dare County from Monday with Strict Guidelines and Collection Protocols

Large Item Pickup Commencing in Dare County from Monday

The Dare County Public Works Department has made an announcement regarding a large item pickup in the unincorporated areas of the county, starting from Monday, March 18, 2024. The large item pickup operation, expected to last approximately 12-15 days, will be conducted exclusively by a private contractor, Southern Disaster Recovery.

Items Accepted and Collection Protocol

The collection will be executed in a strict one-pass only format due to time and budgetary constraints. Citizens are therefore requested to sort their items based on their types and place them on the roadside. Acceptable items include automobile tires, radiators, scrap metals, appliances, as well as furniture like mattresses and box springs. However, citizens are asked to remove the doors from refrigerators.

Prohibited Items and Rejections

Items like old clothing, shoes, cardboard, tree limbs, construction materials, boats, propane tanks, and hazardous materials will not be accepted during the pickup. Any items which are rejected due to improper sorting or non-approval will be left on the roadside and will have to be disposed of at the owner’s expense.

Affected areas and Limitations

The one-pass large item pickup shall occur in unincorporated regions of Dare County, which include numerous communities like Martin’s Point, Colington Island, Roanoke Island, Mainland Dare County, and Hatteras Island among others. It’s important to note that the large item pickup will not be covering the incorporated towns of Dare County.

Household Hazardous Waste Collection Event

In addition to the large item pickup, the Dare County Public Works Department will also be hosting a three-day household hazardous waste collection event. This event, scheduled for May 9-11, 2024, is set to take place in three separate locations. At these events, citizens can drop off restricted items like motor oil and paint chemicals in spill-proof containers for safe disposal.

Importance of Adherence to Guidelines

Residents are urged to be mindful of the guidelines put forth by the Dare County Public Works Department. With concerns of budget and time at play, the stipulated guidelines are to be strictly followed. Residents are also requested to respect their home and the community, avoid leaving rejected items on the roadside, and co-operate with the contractor’s staff by not interfering during the pickup.

Upcoming Key Dates

The large item pickup, starting on Monday, March 18, 2024 will run for approximately 12-15 days. The household hazardous waste collection event in three separate locations is scheduled from May 9, 2024, through May 11, 2024.

Looking Ahead

Planning for the large item pick up and adhering to the provided guidelines will contribute to the successful execution of the initiative. The Dare County Public Works Department is working assiduously to ensure the best possible provision of service for its residents during this period.
