Dare County Sheriff’s Office: June 2024 Crime Report Recap

Multiple incidents of larceny, breaking and entering, financial fraud, and identity theft, among other crimes, have kept the Dare County Sheriff’s Office working at a hectic pace this past June.

Highlights from the crime blotter indicate that authorities have their hands full handling investigations across a spectrum of criminal activities ranging from property crimes to cyber fraud.

Larceny Incidents and Property Crimes

Beginning the month on June 2, a larceny case was reported from the 300 block of Sandpiper Drive, Colington. The victim had money stolen from their wallet. Another incident occurred on June 4, with an individual being arrested after a bicycle was stolen from a garage in the 100 block of Langley Lane, Roanoke Island; the bicycle was later recovered. Later in the month, on June 19, beach equipment was reported stolen from the junction of Lighthouse Road and Flambeau Road, Hatteras. This came after being left unsecured in the dunes overnight.

Some instances also involved high-value items, such as a camper reported stolen on June 7, from the 100 block of Roanoke Trail. The theft reportedly took place after the conditions of its sale fell through. A more serious occurrence of firearm larceny was reported on June 25, from the 400 block of Sandpiper Drive, Colington; the firearms were reported missing after a domestic situation.

Breakings and Entering

Instances of breaking and entering were reported several times throughout the month. The first one occurred on June 4, and a suspect was arrested; the stolen bicycle was recovered in this case. Another case occurred at the 100 block of Daphne Lane, Roanoke Island, where a neighbor reported a suspicious person at their neighbour’s vacant house. Deputies arrived and apprehended the individual for breaking and entering.

In addition, a case of breaking and entering of a motor vehicle was reported on June 22 from the 100 block of Harbour View Drive, Colington, where the window of the vehicle was broken. Subsequently, on June 24, a break-in was reported at a house on the 1000 block of Wescott Park Road, Roanoke Island, where money and household items were reported stolen.

Various Types of Fraudulent Activities

The crime blotter for June also shows multiple instances of fraudulent activities, including financial card fraud and identity theft. On June 5, reports of unauthorized charges on a financial card, which took place overseas, came from the 52000 block of NC 12 Hwy, Frisco. Also, an instance of identity theft took place on June 6 from the 400 block of Old Warf Road, Wanchese, where an unauthorized transaction was made on a cash app.

In June, obtaining property by false pretenses was another recurring crime. The 100 block of Sir Hart Court, Colington, reported a case where a contractor was paid for work but left the state without doing the work or returning the money. On June 20, a situation was reported from the 26000 block of Bluebeard Road, Salvo, where a subject sent large sums of money in Bitcoin to scammers as part of a property scam. More cases of check altering and illegal depositing were reported on June 22, 25, and 26, from the 100 block of Lee Court, Colington, the 46000 block of NC 12 Hwy, Buxton, and the 300 block of Sir Chandler Drive, Colington, respectively.
