Exciting Events Coming to Corolla This October!
Corolla, a charming little town nestled in the Outer Banks of North Carolina, is gearing up for a fantastic October filled with exciting activities thanks to the Corolla Wild Horse Fund. Two notable events are on the horizon that promise to both entertain and educate locals and visitors alike. Whether you’re a nature lover, history buff, or just looking for some family fun, these events are perfect for you!
Annual Fall Open House
First up is the much-anticipated Fall Open House, happening on Saturday, October 12, from 10 AM to 2 PM at the Betsy Dowdy Equine Center, also known as the CWHF Rescue Farm. Located at 102 Young Rider Lane in Grandy, this event is a fantastic way to connect with the majestic Banker horses that the fund has rescued.
During the open house, you’ll have the chance to tour the facility and meet some of the beautiful horses in their care. It’s not just about seeing the horses; you’ll also get to chat with the amazing staff who work hard to care for these incredible animals.
If you’re in the mood for a little entertainment, don’t miss the free screening of The Secret of Corolla, a captivating 32-minute documentary that dives into the lives of the Banker mustangs and the rich culture of the island. After the movie, stick around for a Q&A session with Meg Puckett, the CWHF Director of Herd Management, who will no doubt have some fascinating insights to share!
To help support the ongoing work of the Corolla Wild Horse Fund, it’s suggested to make a $10 donation per vehicle at the gate. The generous support from attendees is greatly appreciated and goes a long way in helping the organization continue its vital mission.
But wait, there’s more! If you’re feeling particularly attached to a horse you meet at the open house, you can even sponsor it! Sponsorship includes a lovely photo and certificate, plus updates on your horse every few months. That means you’ll get to keep in touch with your equine pal long after the event!
Another fun highlight at the Fall Open House will be a pottery demonstration by local artisan Micheal Middleton. He’ll be creating a unique piece right before your eyes, which you’ll have the chance to win in a raffle. Plus, you can browse through diverse local paintings by rescued Bankers and pick up some CWHF merchandise like shirts and hats!
Book Signing with Donna Campbell Smith
Just a few days later, on Wednesday, October 16, there’s another special event lined up — a book signing with the talented Donna Campbell Smith at the CWHF Museum Gift Shop from 1 PM to 3 PM. Smith will be signing copies of her best-selling book, An Independent Spirit: The Tale of Betsy Dowdy and Black Bess.
This historical fiction novel tells the inspiring tale of a young girl named Betsy Dowdy and her remarkable ride for freedom during the American Revolutionary War. It’s a fantastic read that illustrates the power of determination and the impact one individual can have on history. This event is a wonderful opportunity to meet the author and get an autographed copy of her book — perfect for both young readers and history enthusiasts!
So mark your calendars! These events promise to be a great time filled with learning, fun, and community spirit. Join in and support the wild horses of Corolla while enjoying some local culture and fantastic company. Whether you’re local or just visiting, these events are not to be missed!
