Kill Devil Hills, NC – The Outer Banks Forum for the Lively Arts (OBFLA) has broadened its impact on local students pursuing performing arts education, thanks to a generous grant from Dominion Energy. This partnership supports OBFLA’s mission to provide scholarships to deserving students at a ceremony held on July 31, 2024.
During the event, Winnie Wade, external affairs manager for Dominion Energy, presented a check earmarked for OBFLA’s scholarship program. This contribution not only reaffirms Dominion’s commitment to the arts, but also signifies the continuation of a vital community resource for young artists eager to further their education.
Since its creation, OBFLA has fostered a strong relationship with Dare County Schools. They have provided scholarships to students who aspire to pursue studies in performing arts at colleges and universities. The competition for these scholarships is intense, with selections based on academic performance, involvement in the arts, and the support of personal recommendations.
“The support from Dominion Energy bolsters our educational initiatives, particularly in the performing arts,” stated Carl V. Curnutte, current president of OBFLA. “We are grateful to have Dominion as our education sponsor from 2022 to 2025, allowing us to continue enhancing our local arts community while offering opportunities for students.”
This year, OBFLA awarded scholarships to three talented students: Heath Miller, Ava Nultemeier, and Riya Braunstein. These recipients, who have demonstrated significant dedication to their craft, were recognized for their achievements during the ceremony.
Heath Miller, a musician known for his dedication to various musical disciplines, has been an active participant in jazz bands and orchestras within his school and region. This fall, he plans to further his education in music at Berklee College of Music in Boston.
Ava Nultemeier has captivated audiences with her passion for dance and music production. She has been accepted to multiple universities, including Appalachian State and UNC Charlotte. In her pursuit of a degree in music production with a focus on engineering, she also attended the NC Governor’s School of the Arts for dance.
Riya Braunstein will head to the New School in New York this fall, where she plans to major in film while also pursuing minors in screenwriting and drama. Her extensive involvement in local theatre productions, including roles with The Lost Colony and Manteo High School’s Stage Left, showcases her commitment and passion for the arts.
Wade emphasized Dominion Energy’s pride in supporting OBFLA’s efforts. “We are committed to enhancing and supporting the performing arts through scholarship initiatives that help cultivate the next generation of artists,” she stated.
The partnership between Dominion Energy and OBFLA continues to flourish, as both organizations focus on building a vibrant future for the arts in the Outer Banks. Through scholarships and hands-on training opportunities, they aim to empower young talent and ensure the survival of the performing arts within the community.
As the students embark on their educational journeys, the community remains hopeful for a flourishing arts scene that celebrates local talents and shapes future opportunities.
