Colington Road Checkpoint Leads to Drug Arrest and Seizure of Methamphetamine

Colington Road Checkpoint Leads to Drug Arrest

In a recent effort to ensure safety on the roads, deputies from the A-District in Kitty Hawk, NC, along with several supporting agencies, set up a checkpoint on Colington Road near the First Flight Airstrip. The operation took place on October 9, 2024, around 9:15 p.m., and aimed to conduct routine license checks.

As officers were going about their standard checks, they encountered a driver who was found to be violating their driving privileges. While confirming the driving status, authorities decided to bring in a K-9 unit to inspect the vehicle further. The canine quickly alerted the deputies to the possible presence of a controlled substance.

Following the alert, a thorough search of the vehicle was conducted. To the surprise of many present at the scene, officers discovered methamphetamine as well as various items associated with drug use, commonly referred to as drug paraphernalia. The authorities seized these items as evidence for further investigation.

The driver, later identified as Sarah A. Gist, 33, from Kitty Hawk, was not only assessed for the driving violation but was also evaluated by a Drug Recognition Expert (DRE) for driving under the influence of drugs. This comprehensive approach underlines the commitment to making sure that those who engage in unsafe driving behaviors, particularly while under the influence of drugs, are conscientiously addressed.

Following the assessments, Gist was arrested and faced multiple charges, including Felony Possession of Methamphetamine, Misdemeanor Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, and DWI-Drugs. She was later issued a $5,000 secured bond. This situation emphasizes how important it is for law enforcement to work together to ensure the safety of our communities.

The Dare County Sheriff’s Office expressed gratitude toward all the agencies that participated in the checkpoint, applauding their professionalism and efficiency during the operation. They reiterated their mission and commitment to keeping roads safe, highlighting that efforts like these play a crucial role in combating drug-related incidents on our highways.

Furthermore, the Sheriff’s Office encourages residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities or illegal substance use in their neighborhoods. If you happen to have any information on such activities, you can contact local law enforcement by reaching out to the Dare County Sheriff’s Office at 252-475-5980 or the Dare County Communications Center at 252-473-3444.

Community Events and Announcements

Meekins Field Splash Pad is opening its gates to our furry friends this Thursday, allowing pups to splash around and enjoy some outdoor fun. Don’t forget to bring some donations along, as the town is collecting contributions for pets affected by Hurricane Helene.

Moreover, residents of Nags Head are invited to a meeting on October 15, where they can learn more about a sand relocation program. This is a great opportunity for community members to stay informed about environmental efforts and local improvements.

Overall, while it’s always concerning to hear about drug arrests in our communities, it’s important to acknowledge the ongoing efforts by our local law enforcement agencies to maintain safety and enforce laws. The collaboration during the checkpoint operation is a clear indication that they are dedicated to keeping our roads safe for everyone.
