Coastal Flood Watch Issued for Sunday through Monday

The calm after Saturday’s showers and isolated stormy conditions is set to be disrupted with a new threat to the coastal area. The National Weather Service (NOAA) has turned its attention to a looming coastal flood situation.

The flood threat is expected to intensify early Sunday evening, persisting through Monday morning and potentially into the early afternoon. The induced threat comes from strong west to west northwest winds predicted to blow at an average intensity of 35-45 mph.

Water Level Rises on Hatteras Island and Northern Outer Banks

This wind direction and strength are projected to trigger moderate rises in water levels ranging between 2 – 4 feet. Such rise in water level would significantly affect areas on the soundside of Hatteras Island up to the northern Outer Banks.

Observing the potential harm and resulting safety risks, the NOAA has issued a coastal flood watch. The watch was released on Sunday, March 10, starting at 7 p.m. It will remain in effect until Monday, March 11, at 2 p.m.

Being Prepared for a Coastal flood

It’s crucial for residents and tourists in the vicinity to be informed and prepared for the coastal flood. Steps that need to be taken include moving to higher ground, not driving through flooded areas, and securing possessions that could be damaged by flood waters.

You could also consider reaching out to local emergency management offices for the latest information and instructions on navigating the situation. Keep communication gadgets well charged and be ready to evacuate if the situation warrants it.

Implications to the Local Community

Coastal flooding could interrupt daily activities and disrupt transportation networks. It poses safety risks to people and can cause significant property damage. Much of the local infrastructure such as roads, bridges, and ports may also be severely affected.

Ahead of the coastal flooding, crucial services such as schools, businesses, and public transportation might be suspended. Further, the provision of utilities like power and water may be affected. For sailing enthusiasts, the situation spells high winds and rough seas which only makes conditions unsafe.

The coastal flood watch is not just an alert to potential danger but also a call to action to protect both people and property.
